This week was the last meeting of this year. When the clock strikes Midnight on Dec 31 some how we will have made it to 2024 – WOW ! Did you ever think?? What this really means is a new year of fun and interesting new projects to explore. We are all looking forward to the luncheon on Saturday January 6th. Not only will it give us a chance to see people in person that we haven’t seen possibly since last years luncheon BUT we also get to see up coming programs, new board members and best of all – show and tell. I know, what people talk about most after a wedding or in this case a lunch is the food – well – it was really good last year so I can only assume it will be the topper on another great occasion for NJNA. Who cares how old we all are or how far the date has come, let’s get to the good stuff – new and interesting needlepoint !

We elected a new board at the meeting. We hate to say goodbye to Linda M after all she has done for the chapter along with Cathryn C. but we are also happy to say good luck to Noelle D as the new President. We have a new VP of Programs – Jacqui C. who has been involved this past year with many of the the things we have done (she has wonderful ideas). And let’s not forget those doing the nuts and bolts – Barbara L., Sharon B., Rosie L. and Linda P. !

On a separate note – make sure you pay your dues to ANG National. I have heard they are quite strict these days about payment and will take you off the roster faster than you can blink on 1/1/24. You can’t be a member of NJNA unless you are a member of ANG National and after rumors that I have heard about what we are doing this coming year, you want to be paid up to enjoy all the fun coming up.

NJNA is again participating in the Festival of Trees at the Environmental Education Center in Basking Ridge NJ. You can see the trees thru December 28th with the exception of the 22nd, 24th and 25th. Melita G. had some pictures of the event on her blog and there is certainly plenty to go see. Festival of Trees | Visit Somerset County NJ (visitsomersetnj.org)

Some of the pictures above were from our member Melita G.’s blog. Both she and another member, Brenda C. have wonderful blogs that you can sign up for. They do all kinds of different projects and have many tips. You can read about other guilds they are involved in and their adventures in needlepoint as well as other types of needlework. Always interesting !! Melita’s blog is: Melitastitches4fun’s Blog | A place to share my needlepoint and connect with other stitchers. and Brenda’s blog is: Brenda’s Needlepoint Studio (brendasneedlepointstudio.blogspot.com) Follow them both and enjoy all that they do and share.

ANG has announced that they are having problems with getting the magazine “The Needle Pointer” out again. Don’t expect to see it until January. The issue will include the brochure for the 2024 Kansas City Seminar. Check out the brochure online.

DMC has a new thread out – Eco Vita Naturally Dyed Organic Wool Thread. There are 60 shades and all kinds accessories to go with this new launch. Check out the mini loom they have. Can’t you see scarves on a canvas with fringe hanging down using this new item ? Explore their site as there are many interesting ways to use this thread. https://www.dmc.com/US/en/new/eco-vita-collection?products_en_production%5Bquery%5D=

One of the more unusual grouping of canvases that I have found is by Atlantic Blue. They have an array of coasters that are easy and quick to stitch and each one is a “stain” yup – you read that right !! Coffee, beer, wine and lipstick ! They have a sense of humor !! https://www.atlanticbluecanvas.com/products/drink-ring-coasters-set-of-4?_pos=1&_sid=44b5ca5d7&_ss=r

If you like sea creatures then you have to look at Needlepoint ,com – they are so adorable. They are based on a book by Julia Donaldson’s “The Snail and the Whale” and they are all celebrating Christmas. A cute gift for a grandchild ! They have numerous ones to choose from, not just the ones below and they come with stitch guides and can also come kitted. https://needlepoint.com/collections/festive-sea-friends?utm_source=Klaviyo&utm_medium=campaign&utm_campaign=2023_12_09%20Festive%20Sea%20Friends&utm_klaviyo_id=01EY735XHE675Z0Z1C4Z7SB8DK&_kx=SpNrwJYeSg8JHGV3vDRNkpeUD67Ddf2hdz1HBTATTO0%3D.TxAVmM

2’s Company has a neat looking exclusive called Mollies Trees. Mollie Peterson has designed 3 trees so far for beginners to learn new stitches. Each kit comes with 18 count canvas, fibers and stitch guide. Displayed as a stand up all 3 are lovely and look great together. They are also having a last minute “Flash Sale” on System 4 stands and accessories ! They never go on sale !! https://www.2sconeedlepoint.com/shop/Kits.htm

Village Needleworks in Omaha has an interesting sale that ends today. When you go to the check out you choose an ornament and smash it !! Inside is your discount amount for regularly priced items, anywhere from 20% to 50%. If you shop online, just call the shop and they will smash an ornament for you. If that isn’t enough – your name will go into a drawing for a System 4 table stand and clamp. Village Needleworks Omaha’s full-service needlepoint shop

Colors of Praise is known for their beautifully intricate and colorful canvases. They now have something new called an Anna clutch bag. They are hand made of designer fabrics both inside and out. They look fabulous with a piece of needlepoint attached to them. According to Absolutely Needlepoint in Miami, you will be lucky to score one, they sell out in under an hour when they come in. I looked at the web site for COP but didn’t see anything. Try contacting Absolutely Needlepoint for more information. Absolutely Needlepoint – Discover a world of needlepoint and everything that comes with it. I happen to see them in Stitch By Stitch in NY today and they are bigger and softer than I expected – just beautiful! She only has 2 in the store right now as they fly out the door. Find Your Focus | Stitch by Stitch Needlepoint

Ridgewood Needlepoint has a new exclusive canvas. This summer canvas is all about Ice Cream from the Salty Stitcher. There are various ways to purchase it but – come on – how cute is that !?!?!? They also published some little charts of Hanukkah symbols that can be used in various other projects! Contact the store for more information. Ridgewood Needlepoint

The last blog I told you about the new canvases from Morgan Julia Designs. Greystone Needlepoint in Bryn Mawr is doing an exclusive Bundle for their 2024 Stitch Along. Below shows a list of all you get. The savings is approx $50 !! https://www.greystoneneedlepoint.com/products/gn-x-mjd-2024-stitch-along-bundle

So we all know the best thing we can do is stitch next years holidays starting now for less stress (ROFL). Bestitched in AZ is starting a new club in February called the 13 Days of Halloween. The canvases are by The Meredith Collection and come one a month with the stitch guide and threads. Great looking ornaments for a Halloween tree.  https://bestitchedneedlepointshop.com/products/13-days-of-halloween-club

I am seeing more and more people finally feeling comfy enough to stitch in person again. They are doing it in so many varied ways and places and they are inviting new stitchers to come join the fun that we all know and love. Watch both local shops and retreats, they are being advertised more and more and join in or better yet bring a friend along – here are a few that I have seen lately 1. Find Your Focus | Stitch by Stitch Needlepoint 2. Needlepoint Canvas, Threads and Accessories– KC Needlepoint 3. Little Stitch Shop 4. https://needlepointwithlaurataylor.com/stitch-and-sightsee-revised/

The Needlepoint Clubhouse in Saint Louis MO has a charity event called “Charts for Charity”. I am sure you will all relate to this years chart (below).  The proceeds from this chart will go to The Burundi Miracle Project which supports children in Africa. They also have a 2nd charity and the proceeds from “Maddie Sweet Designs will be donated to “Scholarship America” which helps students pursue higher education. https://www.needlepointclubhouse.com/products/charts-for-charity-2023?syclid=cluh4am5ji7s73cir9l0&utm_campaign=emailmarketing_125582868613&utm_medium=email&utm_source=shopify_email

Tips and Tricks: Have you been “Frogging” again ??? You can’t fool us, we can tell by the little threads on your canvas. You either didn’t use your “Boo Boo Brush” or had trouble even finding one to buy. Amazon to the rescue – disposable eyelash brushes. You get 100 for $5 (no one frogs that much!) Who was that famous stitcher: That was Kate S. H. Dickerson. She has been in business for 51 years and going strong. She has everything from game boards to patriotic to shoes to Judaica to Funky Pumpkins and anything else you can think of in between. Kate Dickerson (KSH) Needlepoint finished pieces

Now that we are all stuffed with Turkey and needing a nap is over, it’s almost time for the last meeting of NJNA this year !! That certainly flew past. The December meeting is going to be an easy peasy stitch in along with a recap of all the counted pieces everyone has done this past year. Make sure you send a photo to Cathryn of each finish (or not) so we can all see what you have been busy stitching. Also, next years officers will be voted on during the meeting. You don’t want to miss this meeting.

It’s dues time again !! Make sure you pay your ANG dues before 12/31/23. I understand they are very strict about receiving them and will pull your membership very early in January if they are not paid. As for NJNA dues – we will wait for Rosie to send up the bat signal to say go ahead and pay them. We don’t want to mess with Rosie’s accounting for the chapter.

The ANG Spring Fling registration has closed and they have 100 people attending. Check out the new version of the Kansas City Seminar booklet as it’s been revised. Apparently ANG is having problems getting the Needle Pointers Magazine out. It is definitely going to be late but rest assured that it will be there soon.

Woodlawn’s deadline to register is the end of January. Make sure you let Linda M know if your sending a piece or 2 as she is coordinating the trailer load going down to be checked in. Her appointment for drop off is 1/25/24 so she will be looking for your pieces at the luncheon if possible. 2024 Annual Needlework Show — Woodlawn & Frank Lloyd Wright’s Pope-Leighey House (woodlawnpopeleighey.org)

Needlepoint Now Magazine has revealed that they are going to have 2 – year long projects going for 2024. The newest one is a counted piece and you will get 16 different stitches per issue. You can make it what you like. Probably a great stash buster. They again are partnering with LNS to help keep the stores in business for everyone. Needlepoint Now – The #1 Consumer Magazine Committed to the Fine Art of Needlepoint

Are you all exhausted from sales, sales, sales ??? Did your email account start to smoke from all the activity? Is your credit card hot to the touch ??? Did you buy anything?? Of course I did !!! Foolish question. Whether you buy anything (notice I didn’t say want to) or not it’s always interesting to see new items so let’s start with clubs – always something new there.

The Needlepointer has 2 new clubs, the first is for those thread-aholics. Each month you get a package of threads that will take you on a journey of color and discovery of different fibers and how to use them to the best results. The second one is their box of chocolates again. This time around they only included 4 designs from the original club. There are 20 new designs with stitch guides and you receive 2 each month. Now for the interesting part – if you sign up for either of these 2 clubs, their National Parks club or their Exotic Birds club they will give you 12% off on the finishing ! https://www.theneedlepointer.com/needlepoint/clubs-open-enrollment?nav_id=701

Bestitched has an adorable new club if you want something smaller – how about 6 Danji Llama candy canes?? So cute, love their faces and they have to be quick stitches. https://bestitchedneedlepointshop.com/collections/clubs-series-1/products/llama-artistry-club

Bestitched also has a new club with canvases by Love You More – perfect for this year’s Plaid Theme !! Five small canvases and all the fun starts in January ! https://bestitchedneedlepointshop.com/products/christmas-plaids-club

This one is just too cute – Needlepoint Obsession has a shop exclusive – the Christmas Closet !It’s done in 4 parts and includes canvas, threads, stitch guide and embellishments. You need to call the store for this one.

Ridgewood Needlepoint also has an exclusive – a fall themed canvas by VNG. It comes in either 13 or 18 mesh. The class will be done in 2 sessions on Saturdays starting in January. Call the store for all the details at 201-612-7770 Ridgewood Needlepoint

The Wool and the Floss in Cleveland has some exclusive canvases from local artists that are fitting for the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – guitars !!! Many to choose from and so colorful !! https://www.woolandwillow.com/products/yellow-star-guitar-guitar-series

Morgan Julia has 8 new canvases and they can be purchased individually or as a bundle which then gets you a neat looking canvas of a bow that can be turned into a box. They are also showing off their Ornament of the Year – rolled dough ! https://morganjuliadesigns.com/collections/gn-x-mjd-stitch-along

I had to show you new kits from Chaparrel in TX – Elves in Ugs !! They put together nice kits and these include the canvas, stitch guide, threads, scissor and a project bag. They have 3 set of feet – one cuter than the next. https://ndlpt.com/search?q=Elf+in+UG+kit&syclid=cllo2ru5ji7s739pmktg&type=product&utm_campaign=emailmarketing_130941321355&utm_medium=email&utm_source=shopify_email

Are you a Zecca fan?? Such interesting canvases with great characters – Bestitched is doing their Chameleon Cravings class via Zoom ! It’s the Zecca “Tasty Snack” canvas in your choice of 13 or 18 count. The zoom classes are once a month over 3 months and is for an intermediate to advanced stitcher as it will be more of a techniques class. https://bestitchedneedlepointshop.com/products/chameleon-cravings-class

Do you own a Lowery Stand – maybe 2 ?? They are marvelous – and Family Arts Needlework is having a raffle for a Hot Pink one !! The winner will be drawn this Tuesday 12/5 in the afternoon. How lucky do you feel ?? Tickets are $10 each or $50 for 6. https://familyartsneedlework.com/

Before you know it the holiday will be here. So, here are a couple of small items for stockings or just little gifts:

Rittenhouse Needlepoint has some great accessories from unusual needle threaders, floss bobbins and my favorite – rabbit scissors ! Go to their web site to see other things that make neat gifts. https://rittenhouseneedlepoint.com/collections/accessories

Next look at Stitching Fox – they have plenty of accessories to browse but one in particular caught my eye – turn an Altoid box into an organizer !! What will they think of next?? https://www.stitchingfox.com/collections/notions

Tips and Tricks: While we are talking about accessories how about Oli Magnets?!?! Available also by KC Needlepoint with their logo on. KC Needlepoint is correct about other uses for these nifty items other than as a magnetic paper clip. See below a few great ideas. https://www.kcneedlepoint.com/collections/magnets/products/magnetic-paper-clip and for more color and size options try Oli on Etsy https://www.etsy.com/shop/OLIBLOCK?ref=seller-platform-mcnav&mc_cid=92621cb63b&mc_eid=0087025bb4

Who was that famous stitcher: That is Julie Pischke – she grew up in her mother’s needlepoint store. When she and her husband moved to Key West she opened her first store and went on from there. She became very much in demand for her bag designs and tropical prints. Though she is now retired you can go to the web site and see some fabulous designs and where you can also buy them. This past weeks meeting gets you off to a running start on your name tag. I had never heard of Tink Boord-Dill alphabets before but what a find ! Tink Boord-Dill Needlework Alphabets – Needlework and Knitting Alphabets for Discerning Makers (tinkbd.com) They are also on Etsy. The list of options for an alphabet is mind blowing. Get creative and we are all going to be looking at each others name tags at the January luncheon. (Better start soon!)

The meeting also had other interesting news – that meeting was Linda M’s final meeting as President of the chapter – we can only say Thank You for all of your hard work over the years. Also, thank you to Mr. M. for his patience !! The new slate of officers was announced and the voting will take place next month. We are all looking forward to an exciting new year ahead.

You should have gotten email yesterday from ANG. It spoke about many things including the Annual Membership Meeting. If you missed it there is a button to allow you to watch the recording of the meeting. They also have the answers to the questions people posed to the Board. Check it out as I am sure you may have the same questions and will see the Boards answers. You can now also see all the classes that will be offered at next years Kansas City Seminar – too many classes – too short a time ! Gail Stafford, Kathy Rees, Debbie Rowley, Wendy Moore, Lorene Salt and lots more. So many beautiful projects along with 2 Encore’s – even if you didn’t get your first choice you would still be happy !!

Is everyone ready for the big day ??? Big dinner all planned? House ready for guests? Don’t forget to watch the Macy’s parade while your cooking and then the Dog Show !! It’s exhausting ! When it’s all over and you need to relax there are a billion emails waiting for you in the hopes you buy from them for Black Friday !! The needlepoint stores are right there with a mix of Christmas lists, new canvases, books etc. Here are a few things I have found so you can sort them a bit faster or trash them !!

Stark Art has teamed up with Stitch by Stitch in NY for 2 new Toppers and 2 new Wrappers. The wrappers are sunflowers and pumpkins, the toppers are ghosts and witches. They show them on glass ornaments but they can be used on other items like candles. Great small projects for next year.

Stitch By Stitch in NY was also showing off new canvases from the fall show and these are so adorable for little ones !!! There are more than what I am showing you and it was hard to pick as one was better than the next. Find Your Focus | Stitch by Stitch Needlepoint

Atlantic Blue has a new designer – a former fashion buyer that moved to NC with her dog “Moose” is the creator of some new designs most of which are Wedgewood inspired cameo’s of 7 breeds of dogs and more in the pipe line. She also has custom options. https://www.atlanticbluecanvas.com/collections/rooney-stitch?_kx=_6T6ZEqw3FzRTyL6whjCxpBoWNmvx7M7ogeQHpVHlzk%3D.SdsruM

Hannah Bass has some new floral designs that she just introduced. Check out her web site, there is usually something interesting to find there (maybe even a gift for someone). https://hannahbass.com/collections/needlepoint-kits/sale

Penny Linn has those great project bags and the cute wicker purses. She is having a sale through November 20th where you buy a bag and get the 2nd one at 50% off. Who says you have to pay full price for a gift ! (The discount should automatically come off at check out) https://pennylinndesigns.com/collections/bags

Thread Alert !! Rainbow Gallery just announced that they are discontinuing 3 thread lines. If you are using any of them for a project you need to stock up before they are gone. The lines that are going are: Treasure Braid 8 and 12 strand, Nordic Gold and Fyre Works Hologram. Homepage – Rainbow Gallery

New Classes Coming: M’s Canvas House has an exclusive on Vintage Needlepoint Glass Ornaments. There are 7 in the series and you better like beading! https://www.mscanvashouse.com/

Sometimes you want a short club so you don’t get behind with so many projects – well think carefully about this 4 canvas club from The Needle Works. It may be 4 but it looks like it’s got lots of embellishments (not a bad thing). They don’t have a web site so call the store.

Bestitched has 8 snowmen in hats by Danji. They come with a stitch guide and if you want they will pull threads for you. https://bestitchedneedlepointshop.com/products/snowman-club

Bedecked and Beadazzled also has a new club, this one by Kelly Clark. They are all Nutcrackers and Trees. Very whimsical but that is what we love about Ruth Schmuff ! https://bedeckedandbeadazzled.com/product/nutcrackers-and-trees/

Seaside Needlepoint is again having their contest if you dare to try !! Send in a clever saying and if you win you get the saying on a canvas along with a $100 gift card. You can drop it off at the store but if you aren’t nearby you can email it with your name and phone number. The contest runs thru February and the winner will be revealed on their 5th Anniversary which is March 15th. https://www.seasideneedlepoint.com/?syclid=clcjmm65ji7s73896tsg&utm_campaign=emailmarketing_148762558722&utm_medium=email&utm_source=shopify_email

Tips and Tricks: Do you have a Boo Boo Brush? A great item BUT – do you really know how to use it???? Check out KC Needlepoint – I have used it and it did it’s job but I can’t say why there is 2 size brushes on it and I never thought to bend it ! (Like many I threw away the paper without reading!) Worth a quick read ! https://www.kcneedlepoint.com/blogs/news/cant-get-enough-of-the-boo-boo-brush?omnisendContactID=61fc368aa1816e00226a532d&utm_campaign=campaign%3A+Boo+boo+brush+%286535858b19ac5ea4f17ad99f%29&utm_medium=email&utm_source=omnisend

Who was that famous stitcher: That was Liz Goodrick-Dillon – best known for her beautiful Christmas Stockings though she did other canvases as well. Sadly she passed away in June after a short battle with cancer. She was a highly sought after needlepoint designer by the age of 25 !! You can find her designs now on Susan Roberts web site. Wow – how time flies ! We have started to collect ornaments for the “Festival of Trees” again. This year Amy B has donated the use of a bigger tree than in the past so we need a lot more ornaments ! You can drop off ornaments at the Edwardian Needle this month and they will also be collected at the November meeting. I am sure we are always a destination tree at the event.

It’s time for nominations as there are open positions to be filled at this next election. Please contact Linda M or Carol B as they are the nominating committee this time around. We are all looking forward to an exciting year ahead with many new ideas and projects to be offered. You will see some of what is to come at the Holiday Lunch in January. Be a part of the challenge to provide new and interesting projects this coming year – and most of all – fun !

It’s getting to be that other time of year – Woodlawn submissions! You will receive an email soon about all the details you need to know in order to send in your piece (or two or three) to this premier event. NJNA is always a big contributor to the show. The theme this time is “Needlework in Everyday Life” Linda M and her better half have again volunteered to bring the submissions down to the event.

Have you been practicing your plaid stitching????? This month’s meeting is all about making a name tag and you can choose to use your new skill of “Plaid” for it. Of course you want it to reflect “YOU” so – make it your own !! I will say that if you attend various stitching events it is nice to have a name tag for all the new people you meet. Embrace the name tag and let’s see everyone’s hard work at the Holiday Lunch !

Don’t forget – ANG’s Spring Fling has opened it’s online registration now for the most popular classes from prior years. You got email on November 3 with the details and a link to sign up. Go for it !

A reminder that the ANG Annual Meeting is on Wednesday November 15th. between 2 PM and 3 PM. The meeting is done virtually and you must register to get the Zoom link. If you can’t make it the session will be recorded. You received an email yesterday (Needle Pointers Newsletter) with a link to register.

Are you a member of Cyberpointers? Does “Groups io” seem to be very confusing?? Me To ! Cyberpointers has a large membership and even the board agrees that many people have a problem navigating this site. They are about to send out a poll to determine the level of interest in doing a tour via Zoom. (I know I could benefit from that, I always feel like I am missing something) They have come up with 2 time slots and are worried about the level of participation on each slot. They don’t want to exceed the capacity of the Zoom session. They are willing to do more Zoom sessions depending on the poll results. Right now they are anticipating doing the tour on November 14 (day time) and 15 (evening). Watch your email for the poll and respond so that we can all feel more comfortable in this ANG chapter.

You now the year is winding down when you start to get emails about gift guides ! Of course we all know how easy it is to make a list of what we want. Books, stands, maybe a get away, one of the new canvases – or two – or more ! Yikes – We are all bag ladies and there are so many great ones to choose from….. I need to take my head out of that needlepoint cloud and get real. Let’s start with a designer I had never seen before, Susan Battle. Stitch By Stitch is having a Susan Battle trunk show and it will make you giddy if you love dogs ! It also has great plaids if you like the look but don’t want to “make your own”. https://stitchbystitchneedlepoint.com/pages/susan-battle-needlepoint-trunk-show?_kx=6D5Y7Jiene-hlgseirQx1RFyVxGMpjd5qfVYcayxxNM%3D.SwCMrn

In looking at Stitch By Stitch’s recap of the latest market treasures they had some interesting ways to use a canvas along with new versions of destination canvases. Check out the tree topper – a very clever way to attache it. Also, I fell in love with the fish by Ellen Skidmore. https://stitchbystitchneedlepoint.com/?_kx=6D5Y7Jiene-hlgseirQx1RFyVxGMpjd5qfVYcayxxNM%3D.SwCMrn

The Needlepointer has a new club ! All different exotic birds ! They expect it to start in January and last for 7 months. You get the canvas, stitch guide and threads with each one – check it out ! https://www.theneedlepointer.com/exotic-birdsdiv-idclubsubtitleopen-enrollmentdiv/p8504721?cse=nl1102&goal=0_3621358244-be48d65811-69343533&mc_cid=be48d65811&mc_eid=2e6039e84f

Absolutely Needlepoint in FL just got the 6 new colors of Silk and Ivory bringing their total up to 250 colors. This thread is manufactured in Switzerland and is half silk and half Merino wool – very soft to the touch. Great for stitching pillows not to mention the variety of color to choose from. Absolutely Needlepoint – Discover a world of needlepoint and everything that comes with it.

Morgan Julia Designs has brought you the giant “Chill Pill”, a multitude of different bar carts, Oysters on the half shell, a Charcuterie Board and lots of other fun items. Now they have a new line of Nautical scissors called Captain’s Clippers. They come in 3 colors and the blade is under 2 ” so they are TSA approved. Very different and another thing for that gift list !! Captain’s Clippers Scissors– Morgan Julia Designs

With the tragic events unfolding everyday in Israel Gone Stitching is helping by having a Fund Raiser. The proceeds benefit the humanitarian support for Israeli soldiers. You have a choice of 3 designs on 13 count canvas. If you want to learn more about the organization the web site is: Homepage War Donation » Yashar LaChayal call the store for more information at 201-385-2100 Gone Stitching

Tips and Tricks: Do you know the difference between overdyed and variegated threads? According to Diversions Needlepoint in CO you need to go to Textile Terms – Definition & Explanation @ TextileGlossary.com. “Overdyed” is a process where previously dyed thread is then dyed again using a different color. “Variegated” starts out with a white base thread so the dying creates discrete markings of different colors. Either way they wind up with multi hues of rich color to add interest in your stitching project.

Who was that Famous Stitcher? That is Rachel Rosenthal of Rachel Barri Designs. The maker of so many self finishing items including those lovely clutch handbags. Check out her canvases as she is the one with the Barbie Dream House among many other great choices.

This months meeting was all about Plaid, Chottie’s Plaid in particular. The combination of rows is based on a date, like your birthday. It comes out looking great and a perfect item for this time of year. Next month’s meeting incorporates your new found knowledge of stitching a plaid to make a name tag ! Cathryn has sent out information already and has canvas for those that requested. We have our first opportunity to use our name tags at the Holiday Luncheon in January – time to get stitching ! December Cathryn will be reviewing all the counted pieces everyone has been stitching this year. Make sure to send her a list of your accomplishments. Maybe we need a prize for the person that stitched the most ! A skein of DMC floss – your choice of color maybe ! LOL !

Chottie’s Plaid

The Kelly Starke classes on how to finish your own ornaments were a resounding success. Jacqui did a wonderful job even when one of the venue’s cancelled and she had to scramble to find another place to hold the class. Everyone had a great time and learned either to do the finishing themselves like a pro and/or to appreciate the finishers we give our projects to !

It’s that time of year at NJNA – election time! Most importantly we are looking for someone to step into the shoes of Linda M, our President. She wishes to pass the torch so the search is in full swing. The position can be done as a shared position so if anyone would like to volunteer please contact Linda M or Carol K B and they can give you an idea of what the position entails.

ANG has announced that you can start to register for their “Spring Fling” Virtual Seminar starting November 1. They are going to send out more details very soon but mark your calendars as the items they have for class will fill faster than you can blink even though you have until the end of November to sign up. I can’t wait to see how many you can sign up for !

Wednesday November 15th is the ANG Annual Membership Meeting that is done virtually. It starts at 2 pm EST and they will be talking about everything ANG. Today is LNS Day – did you go support your brick and mortar store? We would all be lost without them ! So many had all kinds of sales and events to tempt you (not a hard sell). They all just got back from the new TX market and I have seen some stunning new canvases. I even heard a rumor that the painters are catching up so more things will be available quicker. The pandemic and resurgence in needlepoint really caused an unprecedented backlog. Let’s take a look at what is new out there.

Kate Dickerson had so many new items I needed a break ! One was better than the next and many had numerous color options. The most interesting was the Domed ornaments that also come with sparkle confetti – makes them look like a snow globe. Get a glass of what ever you enjoy drinking and settle in on her web site to view them all but here are a bunch to tempt you. Kate Dickerson Hand Painted Needlepoint canvases

Pippin had some new adorable items – I could be a sucker for the little dresses ! What’s New – View the latest Pippin Original hand-painted Canvas Designs (pippinstudio.com)

All you Zecca fans make room in your stash – just amazing ! Needlepoint – Zecca

If you have never seen Stitch Rock check them out. They have fun canvases and some of the new ones are just great. Stitch Rock Designs

NDLPT Designs has a bunch of series – from Champagne to Mixers – lot’s to choose from. NDLPT Designs: Wholesale Needlepoint Canvases and Accessories – NDLPT Designs

I could go on and on and on but here are a few more from Stitch By Stitch What’s New 2023 – Stitch by Stitch (stitchbystitchneedlepoint.com) The Wool and the Floss The Wool & The Floss (woolfloss.com) and Gingham Stitchery The Gingham Stitchery

If you didn’t get to take the ornament finishing class and need a quick project that is finished – take a look at Blue Dogwood. Very cute small canvases that come with a frame – quick easy and impressive !! Blue Dogwood Designs

There is going to be a new retreat happening March 7-10 2024 in Albuquerque NM. This is a canvas countess pilot retreat being held by Debbie Rowley and Kurdy Biggs. Each of them has 2 offerings and if you do it right you can do 3 of them while your there. Canvas Countess – A Pilot Class Retreat

Ridgewood Needlepoint has a new exclusive from The Salty Stitcher. When finished it will fit into a Sudberry box. If you purchase the canvas and threads you will be given Adrienne’s stitch guide free. Reserve your canvas soon as they are expected in the shop sometime in December. News Alert: Old World Designs Needlepoint has decided to sell. They are located in Meno Park CA and Linda Mendenhall has owned the store since 1991. We wish her well and hope she finds a buyer to keep this long loved store open for many more years. Old World Designs Needlepoint Menlo Park Bay Area

Tips and Tricks: I friend of mine emailed me today with a list if tips for when you (yikes) stitch dark colors on dark colored or dark painted canvas – thanks Moira. 1) Stitch in bright sunlight 2) Place a light under the canvas shining up 3) Stitch under very bright light shining directly on the canvas 4) Place a white or neon colored cloth under the canvas while your stitching 5) Lightly sprinkle baby powder on the area (Nope – I would not do that one !) 6) Lightly use a white pencil on the canvas (Not a fan of that either). It’s an eye killer no matter what – do what works best for you!

Who was that Famous Stitcher? If you follow the blog of Stitch By Stitch in NY you will know this is Elizabeth Crane Swartz – she spent the day there today in celebration of LNS day. She has recently joined forces with HedgeHog Needlepoint. Check out her new canvases. Hedgehog Needlepoint

Ornament Finishing Workshop

Standard

What a blast we had yesterday at the Ornament Finishing Workshop by Kelly Starke of Starke Art Designs! About 15 NJNA members gathered together to learn the secrets of finishing our own ornaments. What a relief to be able to wait until the last minute to frantically stitch an ornament and then get it finished in time for the intended recipient. What – you mean some people actually plan in advance?

Thanks and kudos to our Workshop Chair Jacqui C in arranging for Kelly and Robin to travel to New Jersey so that we could have a full day devoted to hands-on training in how to finish our ornaments, both round ones and those pesky odd-shaped pieces. We had a last-minute change in venue (our original location canceled our reservation on Thursday!) and Jacqui had to scramble to find an alternate location, which turned out to be just perfect. Our morning class working on round ornaments and our afternoon class of other shapes were able to proceed.

Here are the early arrivals getting ready for class. Isn’t that a great space for our workshop – the lighting was terrific!

Once everyone was settled, we started to cut out our canvases, foamcore, and fabric to be used to build up our ornament. Here is my round ornament both the back after the “darting” and the front…

We also learned a new way to make cording – using a cordless drill and a vise. Fortunately, Mr. M has both – I apparently gave them to him last Christmas. Who knew I’d be using them myself!

Here’s everyone busy at work. Kelly and Robin had everything we needed for the class. The kit included round ornament templates of varying sizes and those cute caddies had pins, scissors, glue, Xacto knives, and tape. Kelly even had the drills, vises, irons, and cutting mats, as well as a few other bits and bobs.

In just about 3 hours, we all had our round ornaments completed. Yes, everyone finished their ornament at the same time!

The afternoon class continued our journey into finishing shaped ornaments – three of us had light bulbs, and then there were a snowman, a mini stocking, an octagon, a star, a bell, a door hang, and a Christmas tree. The steps for completing are essentially the same as for the round ornaments. But with Kelly and Robin’s assistance, we learned how to “marry” the cording so that the one can’t tell where the cord starts and ends (not necessarily where the hanger is placed), where to place the “darts” so that the canvas can be folded over the foamcore smoothly, and – most importantly – how to fix the little mistakes that can occur during the finishing process.

And with that – our shaped ornaments are done.

Clean up went quickly as Kelly and Robin have everything really well-organized!

Since it’s my post, I get to show you my two finished ornaments!

Thank you, Kelly and Robin, for sharing your knowledge and expertise so willingly. You made the day fly by with your encouragement and good cheer! I’m now ready to try some finishing on my own. I did, however, have to stop Mr. M about 3 minutes into his speech about how to use a cordless drill!

Thanks again to Jacqui for setting up this workshop and for not panicking (at least not too much) after the venue was cancelled. The alternate venue turned out to be a wonderful location for the workshop. I think the day was a huge success.

And thank you to all the NJNA members who signed up for the workshop. We appreciate your support of the Chapter’s activities.

More information about Kelly Starke Designs can be found on her website starkeartdesigns.com. She is also found on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

Happy Stitching!

The temperature is starting to make that turn to Fall. Activities with friends are about to retreat inside. Hopefully you are stitching not only at a friends home but at a local LNS, library, Panera Bread or other convenient place to get together. Since we have the opportunity to meet new people when we head inside what is the perfect thing to have already stitched ????? Yes – you got it – A Name Tag !! And this is why we become members of NJNA – our October and November program will deal with stitching a plaid and then creating a name tag !!!

Coming soon to your mailbox is the new issue of Needlepointers Magazine. You can read it online of course but last I looked they had not put it up. Your email allows you to look at the magazine and how appropriate – they have an article on “Plaid” – no we didn’t coordinate with the magazine ! It’s a real tease from the cover and the color of the threads puts you in the mood for fall. It’s another jam packed issue.

Even though we are just starting fall ANG is trying to get you excited about Spring. (Not a bad thing !) This is when they are going to do a virtual seminar called “Spring Fling”. The seminar will feature five of the most popular wait list classes from previous seminars. You should be hearing more VERY shortly as registration is from November 1 – 30, 2023. The seminar is held during the month of April 2024. If you had wanted to attend any of these classes I am sure it will be easier with a Zoom class but sign up early – just look at your choices – all great !!

FOMO ALERT ! My emails are quiet because next week is the Dallas Market. Next week we should start to see all that is new and interesting in the needlepoint world. Stitch By Stitch had a preview and the variety is amazing. From something really different, a red flower from Zecca to designer pumpkins by Judy Tash to a Halloween scene that you will be seeing as a class given by national instructors. There is always something interesting and new from the show and I can’t wait to see more ! Find Your Focus | Stitch by Stitch Needlepoint

Stitch By Stitch also has a new and interesting handbag – or should I say Bucket Bag. They are by Art Needlepoint and they have a large selection to choose from. There are also 3 different color leathers and silver or gold hardware. “Have It Your Way ” ! https://stitchbystitchneedlepoint.com/collections/art-needlepoint-bucket-bags?_kx=6D5Y7Jiene-hlgseirQx1RFyVxGMpjd5qfVYcayxxNM%3D.SwCMrn

KC Needlepoint has a new book, well, not quite – It’s called “A Modern Stitch Directory”. It’s actually a deck of 50 cards. Each card shows the finished stitch along with detailed instructions on how to do it. A great item for a beginner. https://www.kcneedlepoint.com/products/needlepoint-a-modern-stitch-directory-in-50-cards?_pos=2&_sid=8c6bb3a6c&_ss=r&omnisendContactID=61fc368aa1816e00226a532d&utm_campaign=campaign%3A+Stitch+Cards+%26+Super+Snips+%2864fe2979f0040c47c3e2f0fa%29&utm_medium=email&utm_source=omnisend

The Enriched Stitch in CT is offering a new kit to benefit a local Breast Cancer charity. 50% of the proceeds will go to “Pink Aid” which helps families going thru cancer treatment. The kit includes canvas, threads and stitch guide. https://enrichedstitch.myshopify.com/products/tote-of-hope

SJ Designs just announced that the price of beads is going up. Much of the blame is on the cost of packaging. She also has a new color Zweigart 18 count mono canvas coming – Dusty Rose and it’s a match to DMC floss color 151 pink. Check out the web site though. If you enjoy samplers, antique books, tools etc. there is plenty to look thru. You gotta love the 19th century tape measure that looks like a walnut. And do you remember this as a child??? Shop | SJ Designs (sj-designs.net)

Want to do a quick club – check out Chapparal’s new Winter Animal club – there are only 3 canvases to it ! The first kit goes out at the end of November and includes canvas, threads, embellishments and a stitch guide. In the first one only they also throw in a project bag and scissors – a nice touch ! Parker the Polar Bear, Petter the penguin and Willa the walrus are just too cute !! https://ndlpt.com/collections/winter-animal-club/products/winter-animal-club

I missed this next club thru Needle Bug but was asked about an adorable canvas by Sue and found that it’s part of a club (thanks Sue). The canvas is an ornament round of a football stadium but the other canvases all by Stitch Style are all fall related and iconic. My favorite is roasting marshmallows! There are 5 canvases and you get the canvas, threads and stitch guide. In a twist they also give you the stretcher bars and tacks !!! It says it started in September but you can see if they will let you jump in late. https://theneedlebug.com/products/fall-favorites-club-preorder?_pos=1&_psq=fall%20favorites%20club&_ss=e&_v=1.0&variant=43419851948199

Be Stitched has 2 interesting classes and both are via zoom. The first is “Floral Tea Please”. You have a choice between 2 Alice Peterson canvases. The class is over 3 days starting in November and ending in January so you have time to stitch what you learned. A manageable size of 9 x9 but know they are on 13 count. So pretty though !! Floral Tea, Please! Three Class Series – BeStitched Needlepoint (bestitchedneedlepointshop.com)

The other class they are giving virtually is advanced thread painting techniques. You have a choice between 2 Melissa Shirley canvases which are smaller than the ones above but are on 18 count. This is a one day class on Saturday Dec. 2nd. https://bestitchedneedlepointshop.com/collections/online-classes/products/wild-brushstrokes-advanced-animal-thread-painting

What’s Happening at NJNA 9/23/23

Standard

This week we had our monthly meeting. There was a rather full house for the Zoom presentation given by Casandra Prescott and her daughter Nandra, owners of Sundance Beads. They have been in business since 1979 and are still creating amazing beads and embellishments. They now offer over 400 different color seed beads never mind all the shapes and sizes. On the call were also designers Jill Rigoli and Barbara Elmore to show how many options these beads offer to enhance your canvases. After that presentation I think the number of options is only limited by your imagination !! I never knew they had all the other enhancements never mind how to use them. Just another reason to join in our fun here at NJNA ! Sundance Designs Online

Get ready for next month’s meeting – it’s a “Stash Buster” ! The meeting will be all about PLAID ! I noticed that wine colors are coming in for the fall (You remember them from the 80’s) so we at NJNA are bringing back plaid !! I did not mean to date us but… Plaid can be a tricky thing to do but so rewarding especially if the pattern is related to your birth date. You will also be able to use this nifty skill for the Nov meeting when we will be doing a name tag. Now that is subtle personalization !

ANG has 2 announcements – The BAD is that the Sept/Oct issue of Needlepointers magazine is delayed. The GOOD is that the Auction raised an incredible amount. They wish to thank everyone involved !!

A New Store Opened! Penny Linn started out in 2020 in a one bedroom apartment in Manhattan NY and has now opened a store in Westport CT. I have shown you her adorable designs, magnets, bags etc. before. Now you can go see it in person – just another reason for a road trip ! She has lots of small canvases and something for every level of stitching. https://pennylinndesigns.com/collections/all

And ANOTHER New Store! This one is located in Locust Valley on the North Shore of Long Island NY. “The Red Thread Atelier” is having The Grand Opening on September 27th. They will be having weekly evening stitching on Tuesdays. Good Luck to both stores ! Collections – The Red Thread Atelier

Stitch By Stitch in NY has been at it again – they have the redecorating fever. Having been to the store – it’s all for the good !! They have now put in new flooring this time – a big difference. They have also launched the new web site which is much more user friendly. They are have a big retreat coming in Feb 2024, a new club coming, and an exclusive Raymond Crawford NYC wreath… They always work hard to have something new going on there. Jane of Chilly Hollow is correct – it’s a dangerous store $ – but so worth the trip !! Find Your Focus | Stitch by Stitch Needlepoint

So many people were affected by the tragedy in Maui HI that Needle Paint is looking to help. Thru the end of this year they will be donating 20% of the proceeds of their Hawaii themed canvases to the Maui Food Bank. They have lovely colorful ornaments to choose from if you would like to help. https://www.needlepaint.com/maui-needlepoint

Ridgewood Needlepoint has an interesting exclusive by VNG canvases. They have several deals involved with this offer. If you buy the canvas and threads they will give you the stitch guide for free. You can buy it all separately plus they are going to have 2 class sessions (Jan and Feb) if you would like to stitch the canvas that way. No matter what you choose Stephanie is there to help. Home (ridgewoodneedlepoint.com)

There is new basics class being given by BeStitched and it will be done in 3 sessions. The canvas being used is by Gayla Elliot !!!! The classes involve not only stitches but basic beading and ribbon work. The dates are 11/11, 12/16 and 1/6 for your “Burro Basics !” It has to be a fun class with all that opportunity for embellishment.! https://bestitchedneedlepointshop.com/collections/online-classes/products/burro-basics

There are 2 new clubs about to start. The Needlepointer has an interesting Zodiac canvas. They expect to start in November and it goes for 7 months. Each month you will get a stitch guide and thread packet. I can hear the 5th Dimension’s song playing in the background !! https://www.theneedlepointer.com/zodiac-wheeldiv-idclubsubtitleopen-enrollmentdiv/p8503668?cse=nl0923?cse=nl0923&goal=0_3621358244-174b96f46b-69343533&mc_cid=174b96f46b&mc_eid=2e6039e84f

Bestitched has an unusual Halloween club starting in October. There will be 4 canvases from Spellbound Stitchery and the stitch guides were done by Lauren Kessler. It’s called “Pretty in Witchy Pink” Great for a beginner! https://bestitchedneedlepointshop.com/products/pretty-in-witchy-pink-club

Atlantic Blue Canvases have such a cute new line of “Hobby Santas”. They have more than 30 different hobbies along with some stitch guides. They remind me of the ever popular gnomes you see by many designers !! Since there are 105 days left until this Xmas it’s time to snap them up – for NEXT YEAR !! LOL

Hobby Santas

NEWS FLASH – DMC Threads posted on Linkedin that they have bought Anchor thread !!!! The two lines will continue to be separate as DMC says it will take a year to transition Anchor into their line up. The previous owner will stay on to help with the transition and manage the brand. DMC wants to be the #1 needlecraft brand. DMC

Now for some sad passing’s in the needlepoint industry – Lois Caron has passed away. She is the founder and President of the Caron Collection. She created beautiful hand dyed threads for several thread lines and distributes them all over the world. She will be greatly missed but the family intends to keep the company running. About The CARON Collection (caron-net.com)

The second passing is Liz Goodrick – Dillon. She was well known for her elaborate Christmas Stockings. A lover of nature explains all the backgrounds on her designs. She was also a designer of scenes on puzzles, fabric and greeting cards. She too will be missed.

TIPS AND TRICKS I have 2 – the first is from our own Melita G.- if you use Evertite Stretcher Bars you are well aware of the tool you need to tighten them. Melita is right – I would not want to go past the TSA in the airport with that tool. She has an inexpensive work around – use a 3/32″ Hex Dogging Key – ugh – why didn’t we all think of that?? Did you even know what that was? – I didn’t ! They come in a pack of 10 from, where else but Amazon for $9. Melita keeps them where ever she thinks she will need them. It’s smaller so it’s easier to carry in your bag of tools. Thank you Melita !

The 2nd one is from KC Needlepoint – do you have an “Un-Stitcher” ? No – it’s not a seem ripper. It’s actually a quilting tool that works well when you are trying to rip out a section you have stitched without cutting the canvas. Looks like another handy dandy tool to have ! Aren’t we all about our tools??? https://www.kcneedlepoint.com/products/the-un-stitcher?_pos=1&_sid=564cf2108&_ss=r

Who was that Famous Stitcher? That was Kelly Starke. From what I read she is everywhere these days doing her classes on how to finish ornaments. The pandemic created such a backlog for finishers she is easing their burden. Of course she is about much more than that, just look at her web site. Home (starkeartdesigns.com)

Congratulations to 2 of our members for being recognized thru EGA at their seminar in Boston. Both Cathryn and Melita were given recognition. Cathryn for receiving the Golden Thread award for the Metropolitan Region and Melita for having become a certified Master Craftsman. Check out the blog before this one as Rosie did a wonderful job explaining along with pictures of the ladies – you go ladies !!

I am sure we all can’t wait for this months meeting. A reminder that this is a zoom only meeting as we will be meeting a representative from Sundance Beads. They will be going thru the process of how the beads are made along with lots of other topics. Have your popcorn at the ready !!

ANG has 2 new stitch guides for their “50 For 50” fundraiser. They are looking to raise $250k to continue their mission of Teaching, Promoting, and Preserving the Art of Needlepoint for another 50 years. You can still get the first offerings thru the web site as well. Of course you have to be in it to buy it !!!! https://www.needlepoint.org/default.aspx

I must give a shout out to Jacqui C – she has been most generous with donating so many materials to the Cancer Survivor Program at Holy Name Hospital. We had lots to celebrate at our One Year Party and Jacqui has again given another donation from her dear friends estate. Having found some of her work in a box – we would all have learned so much from her – she was a beautiful stitcher. Thank you again Jacqui for your generosity.

On another health related note – check out Colonial Needle as they are having a Breast Cancer Promotion as the disease is personal to them. By buying any of their 6 canvases 100% of the sale is a donation to research. Colonial Needle Company

The Queen Charlotte ANG chapter is having a fund raiser. There are 2 kits available from the chapter. Jeanne Saward is the chapters Secretary and in charge of the promotion. I can attest to her efficiency as I bought the pumpkin and it came faster than you could blink. It has so many color combos that can be done- it is something for everyone’s taste. It comes with a color stitch guide, line drawn canvas and even special thread for the pumpkins stem. The bunny also has a color stitch guide and line drawn canvas. What a neat guild project and they have group pricing !!! The price of the kits will go up after September so go for it now !! Contact Jeanne at jeanne.saward@gmail.com and she will give you all the particulars. I can’t wait to do mine !!!

The Needle Artists By The Sea chapter are also having a fundraiser to help sponsor the Shoreline Stitchers event. It is a judged needle arts competition in Sourthern CA held every 2 years. To help with the cost of the event they are having a zoom class for the cutest “Medusa Sea Jelly Ornament” that has many opportunities for different colorways. Here is the information: SSS Fundraising Event_sept2023_063023 (needleartistsbythesea.org)

Up an coming items to watch for – sometime in the spring ANG is going to have a Virtual Seminar. They will be sharing more information soon. The Dallas Market is in the middle of next month – lock up those wallets ! Also, Needlepoint Now magazine has revealed their 2024 year long project and it’s all about “HOME”

It seems that some of our favorite stores have revamped their web sites. Stitch By Stitch in NY updated their store with new paint and rugs so now it was time for their web site. It was a big overhaul and it is much more light and airy looking like the store. Be careful, I got sucked in almost immediately it’s so enticing !! Find Your Focus | Stitch by Stitch Needlepoint

Unwind Studio has also had a redesign. They have simple yet fun items from canvases to accessories. Nice choices and colorful for beginner and advanced. https://www.unwind.studio/collections/needlepoint-kits-canvases

Morgan Julia has just come out with new acrylic containers that go with their cute “Chill Pill” and Bar Cart canvases. While looking at their site though – ugh – I found some more adorable items. https://morganjuliadesigns.com/

They just make you smile ! https://www.emilysstitchery.com/product/halloween-owl-club/15536?utm_source=sqmktg_email

Atlantic Blue has come out with 35 new canvases. Many are small quick stitches like a library card, cookies or Flavor town hot dog. There is also a bunch of “Kaleidoscopes” of different items. Of course they have lots to look at on their web site !! https://www.atlanticbluecanvas.com/collections/summer-2023-drop?_kx=_6T6ZEqw3FzRTyL6whjCxpBoWNmvx7M7ogeQHpVHlzk%3D.SdsruM

Can you believe it – Queen Elizabeth II passed away a year ago on September 8th !! Where did all that time go to? She is still a popular needlepoint canvas. Queen Elizabeth Needlepoint Canvas – Etsy

Tips and Tricks: From Diversions Needlepoint in CO – suggestions for when you are stitching a dark color on dark canvas – an eye killer ! 1. Stitch outside if you can – daylight shows the canvas intersections better. 2. Use the best indoor lighting you can. 3. Use a magnifier. 4. use a light or very bright color cloth under your stitching – the color comes thru the canvas and makes the holes easier to see. 5. The pattern of a decorative stitch will assist in directing the stitcher to the next stitch location on a dark canvas.

Who was that Famous Stitcher? That was Patricia Sone. Like many of us, she has been stitching since her early teens. Being from Dallas Texas she worked and taught for many years in a needlepoint shop before going out on her own. She has become well known for her witty and graphic designs

We all love the many things they offer along with seeing the color and texture in person. They usually have something unexpected that we can’t resist. Check with your LNS for any sales or events.

I am sure we have all seen the horrible destruction on the island of Maui. All that history is gone. They need so much to rebuild it all that they will need help. Elizabeth Bradley is one of several needlepoint companies that is pitching in. They are donating 50% of all the sales from 2 of their kits purchased thru Sunday the 27th of August. The donation will go directly to the Red Cross of Hawaii. The kits are of just stunning Hibiscus flowers native to Hawaii. https://americas.elizabethbradley.com/collections/help-for-hawaii

Another charity event going on is thru The Stitching Studio in VA. They are accepting items you would like to “destash” during the months of August and September.
