What a blast we had yesterday at the Ornament Finishing Workshop by Kelly Starke of Starke Art Designs! About 15 NJNA members gathered together to learn the secrets of finishing our own ornaments. What a relief to be able to wait until the last minute to frantically stitch an ornament and then get it finished in time for the intended recipient. What – you mean some people actually plan in advance?
Thanks and kudos to our Workshop Chair Jacqui C in arranging for Kelly and Robin to travel to New Jersey so that we could have a full day devoted to hands-on training in how to finish our ornaments, both round ones and those pesky odd-shaped pieces. We had a last-minute change in venue (our original location canceled our reservation on Thursday!) and Jacqui had to scramble to find an alternate location, which turned out to be just perfect. Our morning class working on round ornaments and our afternoon class of other shapes were able to proceed.
Here are the early arrivals getting ready for class. Isn’t that a great space for our workshop – the lighting was terrific!
Once everyone was settled, we started to cut out our canvases, foamcore, and fabric to be used to build up our ornament. Here is my round ornament both the back after the “darting” and the front…
We also learned a new way to make cording – using a cordless drill and a vise. Fortunately, Mr. M has both – I apparently gave them to him last Christmas. Who knew I’d be using them myself!
Here’s everyone busy at work. Kelly and Robin had everything we needed for the class. The kit included round ornament templates of varying sizes and those cute caddies had pins, scissors, glue, Xacto knives, and tape. Kelly even had the drills, vises, irons, and cutting mats, as well as a few other bits and bobs.
In just about 3 hours, we all had our round ornaments completed. Yes, everyone finished their ornament at the same time!
The afternoon class continued our journey into finishing shaped ornaments – three of us had light bulbs, and then there were a snowman, a mini stocking, an octagon, a star, a bell, a door hang, and a Christmas tree. The steps for completing are essentially the same as for the round ornaments. But with Kelly and Robin’s assistance, we learned how to “marry” the cording so that the one can’t tell where the cord starts and ends (not necessarily where the hanger is placed), where to place the “darts” so that the canvas can be folded over the foamcore smoothly, and – most importantly – how to fix the little mistakes that can occur during the finishing process.
And with that – our shaped ornaments are done.
Clean up went quickly as Kelly and Robin have everything really well-organized!
Since it’s my post, I get to show you my two finished ornaments!
Thank you, Kelly and Robin, for sharing your knowledge and expertise so willingly. You made the day fly by with your encouragement and good cheer! I’m now ready to try some finishing on my own. I did, however, have to stop Mr. M about 3 minutes into his speech about how to use a cordless drill!
Thanks again to Jacqui for setting up this workshop and for not panicking (at least not too much) after the venue was cancelled. The alternate venue turned out to be a wonderful location for the workshop. I think the day was a huge success.
And thank you to all the NJNA members who signed up for the workshop. We appreciate your support of the Chapter’s activities.
More information about Kelly Starke Designs can be found on her website starkeartdesigns.com. She is also found on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
The temperature is starting to make that turn to Fall. Activities with friends are about to retreat inside. Hopefully you are stitching not only at a friends home but at a local LNS, library, Panera Bread or other convenient place to get together. Since we have the opportunity to meet new people when we head inside what is the perfect thing to have already stitched ????? Yes – you got it – A Name Tag !! And this is why we become members of NJNA – our October and November program will deal with stitching a plaid and then creating a name tag !!!
Coming soon to your mailbox is the new issue of Needlepointers Magazine. You can read it online of course but last I looked they had not put it up. Your email allows you to look at the magazine and how appropriate – they have an article on “Plaid” – no we didn’t coordinate with the magazine ! It’s a real tease from the cover and the color of the threads puts you in the mood for fall. It’s another jam packed issue.
Even though we are just starting fall ANG is trying to get you excited about Spring. (Not a bad thing !) This is when they are going to do a virtual seminar called “Spring Fling”. The seminar will feature five of the most popular wait list classes from previous seminars. You should be hearing more VERY shortly as registration is from November 1 – 30, 2023. The seminar is held during the month of April 2024. If you had wanted to attend any of these classes I am sure it will be easier with a Zoom class but sign up early – just look at your choices – all great !!
FOMO ALERT ! My emails are quiet because next week is the Dallas Market. Next week we should start to see all that is new and interesting in the needlepoint world. Stitch By Stitch had a preview and the variety is amazing. From something really different, a red flower from Zecca to designer pumpkins by Judy Tash to a Halloween scene that you will be seeing as a class given by national instructors. There is always something interesting and new from the show and I can’t wait to see more ! Find Your Focus | Stitch by Stitch Needlepoint
The Enriched Stitch in CT is offering a new kit to benefit a local Breast Cancer charity. 50% of the proceeds will go to “Pink Aid” which helps families going thru cancer treatment. The kit includes canvas, threads and stitch guide. https://enrichedstitch.myshopify.com/products/tote-of-hope
SJ Designs just announced that the price of beads is going up. Much of the blame is on the cost of packaging. She also has a new color Zweigart 18 count mono canvas coming – Dusty Rose and it’s a match to DMC floss color 151 pink. Check out the web site though. If you enjoy samplers, antique books, tools etc. there is plenty to look thru. You gotta love the 19th century tape measure that looks like a walnut. And do you remember this as a child??? Shop | SJ Designs (sj-designs.net)
Want to do a quick club – check out Chapparal’s new Winter Animal club – there are only 3 canvases to it ! The first kit goes out at the end of November and includes canvas, threads, embellishments and a stitch guide. In the first one only they also throw in a project bag and scissors – a nice touch ! Parker the Polar Bear, Petter the penguin and Willa the walrus are just too cute !! https://ndlpt.com/collections/winter-animal-club/products/winter-animal-club
I missed this next club thru Needle Bug but was asked about an adorable canvas by Sue and found that it’s part of a club (thanks Sue). The canvas is an ornament round of a football stadium but the other canvases all by Stitch Style are all fall related and iconic. My favorite is roasting marshmallows! There are 5 canvases and you get the canvas, threads and stitch guide. In a twist they also give you the stretcher bars and tacks !!! It says it started in September but you can see if they will let you jump in late. https://theneedlebug.com/products/fall-favorites-club-preorder?_pos=1&_psq=fall%20favorites%20club&_ss=e&_v=1.0&variant=43419851948199
Be Stitched has 2 interesting classes and both are via zoom. The first is “Floral Tea Please”. You have a choice between 2 Alice Peterson canvases. The class is over 3 days starting in November and ending in January so you have time to stitch what you learned. A manageable size of 9 x9 but know they are on 13 count. So pretty though !! Tips and Tricks: Think outside of the box – anything can become a tooth fairy pillow ! A customer at Absolutely Needlepoint made one out of a bean bag !! What ever fits the person receiving it !!
Who was that Famous Stitcher? That was Kathy Rees of Needle Delights. She has some of the most colorful designs and so many to pick from !! Recently married but that hasn’t slowed her down as she has added several new designs. Needle Delights Originals – Needle Delights Originals

Don’t forget Saturday October 21 is Local Needlepoint Shop Day – Buy a Canvas, threads etc and show your support for your brick and mortar stores. Where would we be without them ?!?!
This week we had our monthly meeting. There was a rather full house for the Zoom presentation given by Casandra Prescott and her daughter Nandra, owners of Sundance Beads. They have been in business since 1979 and are still creating amazing beads and embellishments. They now offer over 400 different color seed beads never mind all the shapes and sizes. On the call were also designers Jill Rigoli and Barbara Elmore to show how many options these beads offer to enhance your canvases. After that presentation I think the number of options is only limited by your imagination !! I never knew they had all the other enhancements never mind how to use them. Just another reason to join in our fun here at NJNA ! Sundance Designs Online
Get ready for next month’s meeting – it’s a “Stash Buster” ! The meeting will be all about PLAID ! I noticed that wine colors are coming in for the fall (You remember them from the 80’s) so we at NJNA are bringing back plaid !! I did not mean to date us but… Plaid can be a tricky thing to do but so rewarding especially if the pattern is related to your birth date. You will also be able to use this nifty skill for the Nov meeting when we will be doing a name tag. Now that is subtle personalization !
ANG has 2 announcements – The BAD is that the Sept/Oct issue of Needlepointers magazine is delayed. The GOOD is that the Auction raised an incredible amount. They wish to thank everyone involved !!
A New Store Opened! Penny Linn started out in 2020 in a one bedroom apartment in Manhattan NY and has now opened a store in Westport CT. I have shown you her adorable designs, magnets, bags etc. before. Now you can go see it in person – just another reason for a road trip ! She has lots of small canvases and something for every level of stitching. https://pennylinndesigns.com/collections/all
And ANOTHER New Store! This one is located in Locust Valley on the North Shore of Long Island NY. “The Red Thread Atelier” is having The Grand Opening on September 27th. They will be having weekly evening stitching on Tuesdays. Good Luck to both stores ! Collections – The Red Thread Atelier
Stitch By Stitch in NY has been at it again – they have the redecorating fever. Having been to the store – it’s all for the good !! They have now put in new flooring this time – a big difference. They have also launched the new web site which is much more user friendly. They are have a big retreat coming in Feb 2024, a new club coming, and an exclusive Raymond Crawford NYC wreath… They always work hard to have something new going on there. Jane of Chilly Hollow is correct – it’s a dangerous store $ – but so worth the trip !! Find Your Focus | Stitch by Stitch Needlepoint

There is new basics class being given by BeStitched and it will be done in 3 sessions. The canvas being used is by Gayla Elliot !!!! The classes involve not only stitches but basic beading and ribbon work. The dates are 11/11, 12/16 and 1/6 for your “Burro Basics !” It has to be a fun class with all that opportunity for embellishment.! https://bestitchedneedlepointshop.com/collections/online-classes/products/burro-basics

Atlantic Blue Canvases have such a cute new line of “Hobby Santas”. They have more than 30 different hobbies along with some stitch guides. They remind me of the ever popular gnomes you see by many designers !! Since there are 105 days left until this Xmas it’s time to snap them up – for NEXT YEAR !! LOL
NEWS FLASH – DMC Threads posted on Linkedin that they have bought Anchor thread !!!! The two lines will continue to be separate as DMC says it will take a year to transition Anchor into their line up. The previous owner will stay on to help with the transition and manage the brand. DMC wants to be the #1 needlecraft brand. DMC
Now for some sad passing’s in the needlepoint industry – Lois Caron has passed away. She is the founder and President of the Caron Collection. She created beautiful hand dyed threads for several thread lines and distributes them all over the world. She will be greatly missed but the family intends to keep the company running. About The CARON Collection (caron-net.com)
The second passing is Liz Goodrick – Dillon. She was well known for her elaborate Christmas Stockings. A lover of nature explains all the backgrounds on her designs. She was also a designer of scenes on puzzles, fabric and greeting cards. She too will be missed.
TIPS AND TRICKS I have 2 – the first is from our own Melita G.- if you use Evertite Stretcher Bars you are well aware of the tool you need to tighten them. Melita is right – I would not want to go past the TSA in the airport with that tool. She has an inexpensive work around – use a 3/32″ Hex Dogging Key – ugh – why didn’t we all think of that?? Did you even know what that was? – I didn’t ! They come in a pack of 10 from, where else but Amazon for $9. Melita keeps them where ever she thinks she will need them. It’s smaller so it’s easier to carry in your bag of tools. Thank you Melita !
The 2nd one is from KC Needlepoint – do you have an “Un-Stitcher” ? No – it’s not a seem ripper. It’s actually a quilting tool that works well when you are trying to rip out a section you have stitched without cutting the canvas. Looks like another handy dandy tool to have ! Aren’t we all about our tools??? https://www.kcneedlepoint.com/products/the-un-stitcher?_pos=1&_sid=564cf2108&_ss=r
Who was that Famous Stitcher? That was Kelly Starke. From what I read she is everywhere these days doing her classes on how to finish ornaments. The pandemic created such a backlog for finishers she is easing their burden. Of course she is about much more than that, just look at her web site. Home (starkeartdesigns.com)
Congratulations to 2 of our members for being recognized thru EGA at their seminar in Boston. Both Cathryn and Melita were given recognition. Cathryn for receiving the Golden Thread award for the Metropolitan Region and Melita for having become a certified Master Craftsman. Check out the blog before this one as Rosie did a wonderful job explaining along with pictures of the ladies – you go ladies !!
I am sure we all can’t wait for this months meeting. A reminder that this is a zoom only meeting as we will be meeting a representative from Sundance Beads. They will be going thru the process of how the beads are made along with lots of other topics. Have your popcorn at the ready !!
ANG has 2 new stitch guides for their “50 For 50” fundraiser. You can still get the first offerings thru the web site as well. Of course you have to be in it to buy it !!!! https://www.needlepoint.org/default.aspx
I must give a shout out to Jacqui C – she has been most generous with donating so many materials to the Cancer Survivor Program at Holy Name Hospital. We had lots to celebrate at our One Year Party and Jacqui has again given another donation from her dear friends estate. Having found some of her work in a box – we would all have learned so much from her – she was a beautiful stitcher. Thank you again Jacqui for your generosity.
On another health related note – check out Colonial Needle as they are having a Breast Cancer Promotion as the disease is personal to them. By buying any of their 6 canvases 100% of the sale is a donation to research. Colonial Needle Company
The Queen Charlotte ANG chapter is having a fund raiser. There are 2 kits available from the chapter. Jeanne Saward is the chapters Secretary and in charge of the promotion. I can attest to her efficiency as I bought the pumpkin and it came faster than you could blink. It has so many color combos that can be done- it is something for everyone’s taste. It comes with a color stitch guide, line drawn canvas and even special thread for the pumpkins stem. The bunny also has a color stitch guide and line drawn canvas. What a neat guild project and they have group pricing !!! The price of the kits will go up after September so go for it now !! Contact Jeanne at jeanne.saward@gmail.com and she will give you all the particulars. I can’t wait to do mine !!!
The Needle Artists By The Sea chapter are also having a fundraiser to help sponsor the Shoreline Stitchers event. It is a judged needle arts competition in Sourthern CA held every 2 years. Can you believe it – Queen Elizabeth II passed away a year ago on September 8th !! Where did all that time go to? She is still a popular needlepoint canvas. Queen Elizabeth Needlepoint Canvas – Etsy
Tips and Tricks: From Diversions Needlepoint in CO – suggestions for when you are stitching a dark color on dark canvas – an eye killer ! 1. Stitch outside if you can – daylight shows the canvas intersections better. 2. Use the best indoor lighting you can. 3. Use a magnifier. 4. use a light or very bright color cloth under your stitching – the color comes thru the canvas and makes the holes easier to see. 5. The pattern of a decorative stitch will assist in directing the stitcher to the next stitch location on a dark canvas.
Who was that Famous Stitcher? That was Patricia Sone. Like many of us, she has been stitching since her early teens. Being from Dallas Texas she worked and taught for many years in a needlepoint shop before going out on her own. She has become well known for her witty and graphic designs
Two of our NJNA Members were recognized at the opening banquet of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America (EGA) National Seminar in Boston.

I am sure we have all seen the horrible destruction on the island of Maui. All that history is gone. They need so much to rebuild it all that they will need help. This past meeting was all about our guild’s Woodlawn submissions. Woodlawn celebrated their 60th anniversary this year showing and judging needlework. This years theme was “The Joy Of Needlework” – and we certainly enjoy !! We sent in 31 pieces and again came away with several prizes including Barbara L’s Judge’s Choice Award for her “Cray Cray” bird and Melita G’s 2nd place for original design. We got to see pictures of other submissions and it was more incentive to again submit our work in 2024. Can’t wait to hear what the new theme will be.
Next month will be a “Stitch In” since so many will either be at seminar or on vacation. September however will be very interesting !! We will have a representative from Sundance Beads giving a talk about all their products. This may be a bit longer than our allotted time in the Library so this meeting will be a zoom only. Here we are in the middle of a heat wave that could melt your shoes to the pavement and all I keep seeing is Christmas in July sales !! Everyone likes a good sale but I just want a cold drink in this weather! HOWEVER, Chaparral Needle Point has a new exclusive kit – Baby Sven the Reindeer – you gotta love that face. The kits ship mid October and include threads, embellishments, stitch guide and a project bag. Quick and easy as it’s a 5 inches round – doable for this year (particularly if you are taking the chapters finishing course – I’m just saying!). https://ndlpt.com/products/baby-sven-reindeer-kit?syclid=cj2kqgausvigrob88k00&utm_campaign=emailmarketing_129505362059&utm_medium=email&utm_source=shopify_email
Now seriously – The Needlepoint Club House has some of the cutest Tooth Fairy Pillows I have seen. I also found something new in the way of fibers. If you haven’t stitched with Straw Silk you are missing out. Well, The Club House has Straw Silk Palettes with 5 different colors in a similar color way. They also have a lot of interesting and unique items on their web site – worth a look. https://www.needlepointclubhouse.com/collections/new-arrivals
Did you get all your fruits and vegetables in today? (not my favorite commercial) but I would gladly take one of Evergreen Needlepoint’s fruit eyeglass cases – it might be the heat but they look so cool and refreshing. You can also have them personalized. https://www.evergreenneedlepoint.com/collections/all-canvases
TIPS AND TRICKS: Have you ever had something on your canvas that you would like to “disappear”? Presto White Out works ! No brushes or mess like with acrylic paints. Pin point accurate and it dries quickly – can’t ask for much more.
Who was that Famous Stitcher? That was Toni Randall – the owner of Whimsy and Grace. In September of 2020 she lost everything to a wild fire except a few possessions and her dog. The needlepoint community gave her a big hug and a helping hand to get back on her feet.
This month’s meeting is only days away. Remember to bring your dinner with you if your attending the meeting at the library as they are allowing you to again bring in food. The meeting will start about 7:15 to allow for clean up time. The topic will be a review of the Woodlawn submissions this year. Our August meeting will be a “laid back” stitch in.
It’s almost here !! The ANG Atlanta Seminar starts August 10th. Please make sure you have contacted Linda M with your contact information. She is also looking for which classes you are attending. I can’t wait to hear all about it and see what everyone comes back with.
The new July/Aug Needle Pointers magazine will be out soon. They are looking for participants in the “Tale of Two Stitchers” column. They have three interesting canvases to be stitched. Maybe you would be interested in doing one???? Each one has lots of opportunists for a spectacular take on the picture. Go to the next picture for more information.
Back in March / April 2022 Needle Pointers magazine had a cover project that was fascinating. It was called Fibonacci Swirls and it was shown in beige colors. If you are a member of Cyberpointers – they are going to be doing classes on it in March 2024 for free !! You have to register (starting Feb 15 2024) but check out some of the colorways they are showing it in. A great way to learn new stitches and have a stunning piece in the end. Gotta love those Jean Hilton stitches.
A last reminder that the Edwardian Needle will be closed starting Wed July 26th. Make sure you have enough thread to keep you going as she will be closed approximately 3 weeks. Pam also has a PLD Trunk Show in the store until she closes for the break. Some amazing canvases to go thru from whimsical cats to beautiful scenes, ornaments …
Breaking News – Rittenhouse Needlepoint has new owners !! Russell and Stephen have sold a majority share of the business to a group of people that shined above all the rest that made an offer. They have not said yet who this group is but that they have prior expertise in running a retail business. A new web site is coming, a change in the way finishing is done and more. Their ambitious plans are meant to bring this craft to a broader audience. Good Luck – can’t wait to hear more details ! My Needlepoint

They are having a Lee self finishing trunk show for the month of July and this is the first time I have seen a backpack or a self finishing pillow. A friend of mine sent me an email for a web site I had never seen before – it’s called Lucky Jonquil Lucky Jonquil. Get a drink of choice and wander thru their web site as they have some really interesting items. Though geared maybe more for embroidery on a hoop they have some great threads, notions and if you enjoy Sashiko – well, they have patterns, threads, thimbles and more. I am a lover of Perle 8 and they have variegated balls in lovely colors. My credit card might be sizzling soon!
Tips and Tricks: What a great idea from the Serendipity web site – don’t have a needle minder with you? Out in the margin work a Rhodes stitch with some left over wool thread and use that to anchor your needle !!! As Jane from Chilly Hollow says – that is a smart cookie award idea !!
Who was that Famous Stitcher? That is Hannelore Brown, the designer of those retro luggage tags from Hedgehog Needlepoint. Founded in January 2020 at the urging of her children, she channeled her life long creative side for knitting, cross-stitch, needlepoint etc into a company aimed to help you find the joy and fun of needlepoint.

Our member, Ellen B. just finished an unusual canvas. It was on the back of Needlepointers magazine and it was amazing ! She became obsessed and with the help of Pam Miller she has a showcase piece (once Framed Image is done with it). Here is the before framing picture – yes those are real feathers – among other amazing parts to this. Congrats Ellen.

Happy 4th of July !! A wonderful holiday to celebrate unless you have the weather we have been having. Between the rain and smoke haze causing bad air quality – the best thing to do is stay inside and stitch !! Sounds good to me. Since your inside many stores are having Independence Day Sales.
Louise’s Needlework is doing 35% off all online canvases by using the code SALE35 at check out. That web site has lots to look at ! NEW! (louisesneedlework.com)
Then you have Needle Nook of La Jolla – another opportunity – 25% off all in stock and ordered canvases thru July AND 65% off any sale canvases. Very tempting!! https://www.needlenook.com/

Now that you just may have made a purchase – or two – or three… Look at Chaparral for some custom Acrylic Trays. A nice way to safely display your needlepoint finishes. I had trouble finding it on their web site so you might want to call the store. https://ndlpt.com/

Tips and Tricks – What are you using the item your stitching for???? Is it a belt, a purse, napkin rings….. Anything that might come in contact with water should be “Color Fast” Read Ellen Johnson’s article on how to tell if your thread is able to deal with a wet occasion. https://www.serendipityneedleworks.com/color-fastness-needlepoint-thread/
