What’s Happening at NJNA 1/10/26

Today was the NJNA Holiday Lunch at The Grain House in Basking Ridge NJ. Always a nice time. So great to see people in person and chat. The food never disappoints but the real draw is to see everyone’s stitching that they bring to show. Jacqui and Cathryn also told us about this year being the year of color. We all got a color wheel, ring for our up coming threads, a colorful magnet courtesy of Linda M and a pen !! LOL The pen was for a fun circle a word while we were waiting for our desert ! We were also surprised with our President Noelle D. having flown in for the occasion. There was an amazing amount of talent in the room was on display for all to see. Oh My ! The new Needle Pointers magazine is on it’s way and it never disappoints. The cover is great the back cover is spectacular! What is in between will keep you turning pages for quite a while. Our own Melita G is in for her wins at seminar not to mention her column – Timeless Treasures From The Archives. I found lots of surprises and then I got to the Tale of Two Stitchers – I can’t wait to read it in hand to see more details. In just looking thru the digital copy – how creative a group are we ! Amazing pieces that seem to only get better and better.

ANG now has something new called Independent Learning. This is Correspondence Courses, CyberWorkshop, and Workshop by Mail all rolled into one. Two ways to learn and a simplified registration process all to make it easier to enjoy a class. Check it out on the web site (after they fix it) and there should be 2 courses you can already choose from.

ANG also announced the new Stitch of the Month – or should I say “Beard of the Month” VERY different! Each month is a new pattern to create a different looking beard. All of the designs are by Janet Zickler Casey. Not just for Santa or a Nutcracker, they can be used on any canvas needing a beard or maybe some interesting hair !?!?!?!

Was your interest tickled to hear what Pantone’s color of the year is for 2026? What were they thinking?? White ! They may call it “Cloud Dancer” and we know there are enough whites to make you dizzy but – it’s white ! They need to step up their game for next year !

The Needlepointer has something new – an ornament and as part of the kit you get everything needed to finish it. Stitch Stash has a new club that runs for 6 months starting in February. Each month you get an ornament designed by Elizabeth Crane Swartz (known for her dots). You have to commit to 3 months or go for all six. You receive the canvas, stitch guide done by Patti Hoffmann, thread kit and it all ships for free. Stitch Rock has a bunch of holiday canvases (for next year) on their web site – one cuter than the next! You have to love the “Pug in a Pumpkin” needle minder also. What’s Happening at NJNA 12/27/25

The December meeting is now in the archives for NJNA. Even though I was not able to attend this meeting I understand “Needlepoint Bingo” was a big hit. Congrats to the winners ! Hopefully we will see a repeat performance of it !! The slate of officers and the budget were all voted on and approved so we are ready to head into 2026 with more interesting topics to come. 2026 will be the Year of Color !! Each month there will be a discussion about a different color based on the color wheel and the DMC color chart – I can’t wait for blue !

Just a reminder – our holiday lunch is on Saturday January 10th at the Grain House. Last I heard there was still 3 seats left. Contact Cathryn C. – come join a fun afternoon will fellow stitchers !! Don’t forget to bring a stitched piece.

As VP of Membership, I have to thank all those people that were so quick to renew their membership for 2026. You actually have until the end of January to send in your dues. Such exciting news from one of our favorite local needlepoint stores !! Stitch By Stitch is moving. If you have been to their store you know that it is very long and narrow. Barely room for a class. I have to say, they have made the most of their space over the years. Very difficult to not fall in love with numerous items at every turn. (I made the mistake of using the bathroom and left the store with a canvas that was on the wall in there !!) They will be opening on Jan 17th only one block away on the same street but in a much bigger space. We have a new LNS here in Northern NJ – Morgan Julia Designs has officially opened her new brick and mortar store – 278 Monmouth St. Jersey City NJ. From what I read the grand opening was a big success. Good luck to them – the store looks very nice in the pictures.

If you have been to The Edwardian Needle you will notice on the wall a fabulous piece of black work stitching by Marion Scoular called “The Princess and the Pea”. So – I have one word – MIRANEKS ! Friends saw this at a new LNS recently. Versatile and light weight. Lots of thought went into it’s design. I am talking about a new stand for stitching ! I have seen it in 2 colors (but there are several), and for the price on our “Go To” Amazon – it might be worth a try. TIPS AND TRICKS: If you do stitch guides or complicated charts and graphs you know how easy it is to lose your place ! Try using “highlighter tape” to easily find where you are working. The Needlepoint Clubhouse has an array of colors though I bet you can get it in Staples. I have used it and it’s a wonderful thing – less frustration !

What’s Happening at NJNA 12/6/25

Are you ready for Needlepoint Bingo?? Our final meeting of the year is a week and a half away and it’s going to be just for fun! A quick business meeting and then sit back relax and stitch while we play some Needlepoint Bingo. Having played it before – have your “The Needlepoint Book” by Jo Ippolito Christensen handy as all the names of the stitches come from there. I had never heard of some of them and now – I just have to look them up to see! I hope to find something interesting for my next canvas !

ANG is looking for donations as it’s the time of year to give. The nice part is if you give them a donation to help keep the organization going – there is someone that is matching the donations up to $10,000. What a wonderful gesture. You should have gotten an email with the details on Friday the 5th.

Morgan Julia Designs is also doing a charity deal called A Stitch of Strength. The canvas below comes in 2 versions and 20% of the proceeds will be given to American Cancer Society. The time has finally come – the end of an era – Melissa Shirley is retiring after 46 years of designing needlepoint !! Yikes! One of the most beloved designers, but fear not – the company is not going out of business. The employees of the company will continue to produce and sell all of her wonderful canvases. She plans on going back to painting on surfaces without holes !! I am sure everyone in the needlework community wishes her well.

The very well known needlepoint shop in Dallas, Chaparral, has had a lot of issues !! The store is closed due to health issues by it’s owner Heidi. She was planning on moving her operation to Tennessee and becoming an online only store. She had a moving company pack up all her things along with the store – her entire inventory. Along the way the truck caught on fire – everything was lost !! At least no one got hurt. If you haven’t gotten a call from her then your finishing was still with the finishers. How devastating, she is starting all over again. We only wish her well and the best of luck.

What’s Happening at NJNA 11/22/25

The meeting on Wed was fabulous. We had a large attendance and no one walked away without having a new appreciation for Toni Gerdes. I was asked several times how someone could talk about one stitch – well, not only did she, but I think there were several hoping to find some of Mary Rhodes patterns by the end of the talk. They were so beautiful and contemporary. Mary Rhodes authored several books of which many are still on the market as used if your interested. What a GREAT talk. Next month is a holiday celebration game and stitch in – no pressure !

Have you checked out the “Spring Fling”? There is still time to register because after all, the classes don’t start until April !! Registration closes on Nov 26 but by then your in the middle of the holiday. Check out the offerings and hopefully there is something your interested in AND it’s not sold out.

The new Needle Pointers magazine is about to hit your mailbox with the Nov/Dec 2025 issue. As usual it’s bright and colorful and packed with lots to read and admire. This issue in particular has a local needlepoint store to us in the “Shop Hop” article. They spotlighted “Ridgewood Needlepoint”. The Tale of 2 Stitchers canvas is amazing – I want to know how each did the bubbles !! LOL This magazine is a wonderful part of being a member of ANG. The Woodlawn Needlework Show registration is now open. NJNA will be participating in the show as usual. Go online to the Woodlawn web site to register the pieces you want to enter. Thanks to Sharon B. for the interesting update on Kreinik thread. Probably one of the most widely used threads and soon it will be in the LNS on a more reliable basis. Here is what she found out from the new owner – Rainbow Gallery : We have been waiting for 10 new high-speed braiding machines to arrive from Europe for several months: they were delayed due to manufacturer adjustments. After that and time to ship via boat and clear customs and tariffs, they didn’t get here until middle of October. It takes some time to set everything up, arrange electrical acccess, and get connected/started, then building up stock, but we’re on it. These 10 machines are equivalent to 40 old Kreinik machines, and we have 10 more on order. We know it has been a long wait for both Kreinik and Rainbow Gallery threads, and these additions will help dramatically.

Talking about thread Rittenhouse Needlepoint is now carrying a new thread – Pirate + Robin. This is a hand dyed 6 strand cotton floss that is variegated along with deep solid colors !! They say the thread is softer than most so it’s a pleasure to stitch with. Moore Stitching has some new people in their line up of famous people to stitch. My Ina Garten was fun to do and someone else I know did Lucy. She came out adorable with French knots for her hair !! Penny Linn owner Krista has incredible energy for a mother and small business owner that is looking to open another store besides the flagship one in CT. One of the newest items hitting the stores are coasters. When you think of it – they are small so they are a quick stitch. Many of the coasters in acrylic you can swap them out for new designs. They also make a great gift. I was looking at Needlepoint .com and they had holiday ones along with different flowers and seashells…. Choices, choices, choices ! And there are Sales, Sales, Sales everywhere !

The next most popular thing these days is Mah Jong !! Many needlepoint stores are having evening stitchin’s with Mah Jong tables going too. Mah Jong canvases seemed to be same old, same old until I saw these at the Wool and The Floss. Let’s just say – new and different !! Someone I know showed me an unusual “ORT” holder. How cute is this? I believe Home Depot also has them but they don’t have a lid like the Lowe’s version. Smaller than a coffee cup and very inexpensive – they make a great stocking stuffer for all kinds of things – even ort’s !!

What’s Happening at NJNA 11/8/25

I hope everyone enjoyed the Sea Jelly we did in October. Mine is almost finished and is far prettier in person. I can’t wait to have it finished now. This month is Toni Gerdes’s lecture on the Rhodes Stitch – don’t miss it! She does a very interesting talk about this stitch and there are small designs you can do with stash. An excellent designer and teacher. Try to take a class with her, you will be glad you did.

It’s back again – December somehow crept up on us all again. I am still shaking my head that I just ordered the Thanksgiving meal. Well, that means 3 things. 1. a needlepoint Bingo game and stitching for the last meeting this year. 2. I will be collecting dues again soon! 3. The Holiday Party !! Make sure you reserve your seat for the holiday party as it is limited seating. You got an email from Cathryn C. detailing the date, cost and this years menu. Always a fun afternoon and a wonderful get together. So interesting to see what people have stitched and bring for everyone to see. Hope to see many of you there (yes I have my seat already!).

Your ANG membership ends on December 31 but they have opened up the ability to renew now. They also have options to choose from. You can do 1 or 2 years and you can opt for the magazine only online to save a few dollars. By doing it now you will not have to think about it during the holidays.

Congratulations to the 2 new officers, Shirley Chin and Howard Lange. Both long time members that will do great things in their new positions.

Spring Fling is now open and classes are filling! These are all favorite classes from past seminars now being taught virtually starting in April 2026. There are quite a few to pick from and so many great instructors that we all have either taken a class with or wanted to. You have until November 26th to sign up but don’t wait to long – I know the class I am taking is down to the last 5 or less seats.

Don’t forget to take advantage of the new Quarterly Stitch. You can download the pattern. It’s called SUNwear by Ellen Emanuel. What a cute quick stitch. It is meant to be a bracelet but I can see it as a book mark or other uses. The directions say it’s for any level of stitching and it gives a complete guide along with finishing. An easy project for someone that wants to learn.

Colour Compliments is again shipping to America. She is eating the additional cost for duties at least for now. Some of her stock though has risen in price significantly. She is trying to keep any price increases low for the time being. Watch for new color combinations she is devising along with a collaboration. Tough being a small business. In the early 2000’s her daughter Rachel took over the business which was then sold to Janice Doxey who owns it today. Much of what you think of when you hear the name is the art work of Laurel Burch. What’s Happening at NJNA 10/25/25

We had our meeting this week and the Sea Jelly is much nicer in person. I can also tell you that it stitches up very quickly – mine is almost finished. A fun program! Next month we have a lecture by Toni Gerdes on the Rhodes Stitch. Having seen this before I look forward to seeing it again. It’s no wonder so many people want to take her classes.

It’s getting to be that time of year again. Time to decide who will be taking the time to help make NJNA a fun place to be !! Everyone has decided to continue volunteering in their roles except for 2. We are in need of a secretary and someone for programs. Secretary can be done from anywhere. We now use AI to transcribe the meetings so the secretary narrows it down to an outline once a month and that is it. The person or persons doing programs do not start until mid year and the chapter already has an outline of what programs will be for the rest of the year. There is always someone around to answer a question or help out. This to can be done from a distance. We look forward to hearing from people that would like to work with the guild to make it a fun time for all. Contact the President – Noelle and she can give you more info. !

What’s Happening at NJNA 10/11/25

Are you ready to stitch the Sea Jelly ???? I have been waiting for months !! LOL. Jacqui C. asked that you stitch the circle (it went really fast !) This is a cute project that is going to stitch up quickly. Next month is a “Must See” – we are going to have a fabulous designer, Toni Gerdes. She is going to do a talk on the Rhodes Stitch. Having heard it before she does a wonderful job – don’t miss it ! I had computer problems which is why this is a week off BUT, so much happened in that time you will have extra to read!

It’s that time of year again ! Time for all the shops and designers to get together so that we all have lots of new projects and gadgets to buy !! I have not heard anything good about Straw Silk coming back soon. People are stripping stores of it as it is not in production right now. A great fiber to stitch with but we are all going to need a substitute. Who knew Straw Silk had a “Sister Fiber!” It’s called Soie Tissee (pronounced swah t-say).  The designer of this thread has worked to perfect a signature dyeing technique that allows a beautiful graduation of hues on each strand. NEW THREAD ALERT ! Radiance 13 has been released. This adds to the 18 and Mini already on shelves. There is 102 colors to choose from and you can also get bags of special editions with 6 spools in a bag. I have heard some people say that this unravels so it’s hard to work with. According to M’s Canvas house you need to put some Bee’s wax on the end and it should be fine. Worth a try as it is so pretty stitched. It’s That Time Of Year Again! KC Needlepoint is calling on all stitchers to “Stitch & Make a Difference. The Greater Kansas City Needlepoint Guild has been working with KC Needlepoint since 2015. Hearts stitched from all over are used on the doors of recently passed residents so people passing by will give the family the time they need. The Hearts for Hospice program gives the mourning family the heart that was placed on the door as a remembrance. Tips & Tricks: I have used the self finishing products out there and they are great but you definitely could use a little help at times getting your canvas in. KC Needlepoint has a tool to help (though it looks like something my manicurist uses!) The pointed end helps create the gap so you can get your canvas in. The flat end helps smooth out and straighten the canvas so it sits nicely in the item. What’s Happening at NJNA 9/20/25

This week we had our September meeting and having skipped last month there were lots of topics. Aside from regular business we are going to need volunteers to help with “The Festival of Trees” . We do this event each year. Even if you can’t help putting up or taking down the tree we are going to need ornaments. Jacqui C. will be collecting them at the next meeting or you can drop them with Cathryn C. at the Edwardian. Remember to put a list/picture of your ornaments in the bag so the ornaments get back to the right people ! We also discussed next months project – the Sea Jelly. If you are participating, please try to do the outline of the round so we can discuss the body of the sea jelly and then it’s other components. The silent auction has 2 lucky winners, one getting more than one canvas. The remainder will be donated to the Holly Name Hospital Cancer Survivors program. We also got a little information about an upcoming Workshop with Lorene Salt. This will be on Zoom in early 2026 – more info coming shortly. Much of the evening was devoted to this year’s seminar. It most likely will not be like previous years. They are working on it and looking for suggestions. EGA is also looking for a change in 2028. We packed a lot into one meeting !

Congratulations to all the winners in the ANG Summer Online Auction. ANG made out very well making over $15k ! Can’t wait to see what they have in next years auction !

It’s almost that time again – ANG renewal time !! You can begin to renew on October 1st. Watch for an email before that as they are going to offer more membership options that you can choose from.

Now for some great news !!!! A new thread is coming out from Tilli Thomas called “Bisous”. According to Ellen Johnson of Serendipity it’s a premium 50/50 silk and Merino Wool blend, similar to Impressions. The number of colors looks wonderful. Can’t wait to find it in a store to give it a try !!

What’s Happening at NJNA 9/6/25

Seminar is over and everyone is back so this month’s meeting on Wed is all about seminar and how it was. Next year is Denver so I am sure we will hear inside information about what is coming. Jacqui C is also going to talk to us about the Sea Jelly that will be the October meeting’s project. Should be interesting to hear about both.

The new Needlepointers Magazine is out for Sept/Oct and as usual it doesn’t disappoint. So many interesting things to read about. Wait till you see the Tale of Three Stitchers – the faces of the cardinals are all great ! The cover has 3 pumpkins and the stems on them are a work of art. I also want to read the article about lights not to mention the New Orleans store. You need some quiet time to sit and read as it is packed with great stuff. Of course if you can’t wait you can view it online and you got an email with a link right to it – easy peasy !

On a sad note – Michele Roberts passed away last month. You know her from the red and gold hearts offered in the correspondence courses. She was a well known icon in the needlepoint industry with an expertise in silk and gold techniques. To honor her and with the coordination of her family you can still sign up for her heart designs thru the correspondence course area even though it’s being redesigned.

I am sure many of us have experienced problems getting supplies. It’s not going to get any better according to at least 2 vendors. With the tariffs now applying to all dollar amounts, no more exemptions for under $800 – Color Complements is temporarily suspending shipments into the US. Needle Point .com has a new Interiors Collection. The designers you all know – Vernon Kirk of Kirk & Bradley and Don Lynch of Two Sisters. To look at the canvases, they are nice but to see them stitched and finished brings them to a different level. Everyone wants a room that looks like these do. I think the appeal of them is the simplicity and the single color. Tips & Tricks: Ugh – are you a tight stitcher? (I know I am) Trying to pull the tail of the thread thru a few stitches on the back of the canvas can be tough. Try using a needle Grabber to give you the needed grip to get that needle thru. They actually come in a few versions. Some people like to use a tweezer, there are also pink grips for the end of your fingers or small round pieces of rubber. The next time you need to give blood ask for the tourniquet they used. They can’t reuse them and throw them away but to take that and cut it into smaller segments works great. My favorite is an old fashioned rubber finger with the top cut off ! Whatever works for you.

Who was that Famous Stitcher? Yes – that was a younger picture of Tony Minieri the needlework designer and teacher that is also one of “The Squad”. (Along with Suzanne Howren and Meredith Willett). He has many certifications and can create the most complicated stitches that turn out to be beautiful designs. Recently he has had several health issues and we wish him a quick recovery so he can get back to teaching and traveling.

What’s Happening at NJNA 8/23/25

How fast was that – it’s seminar time in NOLA !! Melita has been blogging about her experiences and hopefully she has gotten some sleep (those partying in the streets can be heard on the upper floors!). She showed us what she got in her welcome bag – very nice. But, the exciting part is the awards she won ! At the welcome Banquet she was given the “Creative Inspiration Award” for her “Flowers Along A Rhode” AND she won a 2nd Place Ribbon as an original design-Professional. She is right – what an honor !!! Hope everyone else is enjoying the seminar – a wonderful thing to do if you have never gone. I had the best time when I went and there is so much to do and see.

Our Linda M. reminded us – EARLY – that Woodlawn will be here before you know it. Thank you Linda for lighting that fire to finish our WIP’s !!

Are you hurrying to get items in for finishing this year?? Don’t !! Unless you are doing it yourself or you know your LNS can get it finished in time – most of the major stores are all putting out notices that they can no longer take in anything for finishing this year. This just says that our hobby has become so popular we either have to stitch faster or a year in advance ! (I am stitching as fast as I can!)

There is a new club at the Needlepointer – Peppermint Candies – in lots of colors ! It doesn’t start until Dec/Jan and includes the canvas, stitch guide and thread. Now for some not so good news ! One of our favorite designs, Kathy Rees, has announced that due to rising costs she has to raise the price of her kits starting Sept 1. Depending on the kit the increase could be as high as 15%. If you were on the fence, now is the time to buy. So not everything is bad news – she is also having a sale on 2 Christmas patterns. I just read about SJ Designs (those little round containers with the white paper in the middle containing all sizes and colors of beads). Apparently there have been many upheavals in the industry. First Swarovski stopped supplying the craft industry. Preciosa took over and now – they have discontinued over 90% of their pearl bead colors. SJ Designs has decided to replace their entire line of Glass Pearls with stock from a different factory. This will result in more colors and more consistent dye lots. The current President of our guild found something very interesting – Stitching Cards. Such a simple way to make a hand stitched greeting card. All the instructions are on the web site and with the down load. You print the pattern on card stock and they give you how to do the stitches to make the patterns. This company covers all varieties of occasions and age groups. Some thread and something to punch the hole and your off !! The more advanced have Jean Hilton stitches ! Some also have beads – LOL! Even though one of the nicest LNS’s is on vacation (and deservedly !) Tips and Tricks: Missed a stitch? You think so but can’t find it?? Get a “Domed Magnifier” aka a Bug Eye. I have had one for years BUT KC Needlepoint now has 2 sizes ! A 3 inch – for larger projects and a 2 inch for smaller canvases. She learned in the same shop she eventually taught in and then bought in 2017. If you have never watched an “Unboxing Party” (born out of COVID) you are missing a fun event.
