What’s Happening at NJNA 12/6/25

Are you ready for Needlepoint Bingo?? Our final meeting of the year is a week and a half away and it’s going to be just for fun! A quick business meeting and then sit back relax and stitch while we play some Needlepoint Bingo. Having played it before – have your “The Needlepoint Book” by Jo Ippolito Christensen handy as all the names of the stitches come from there. I had never heard of some of them and now – I just have to look them up to see! I hope to find something interesting for my next canvas !

ANG is looking for donations as it’s the time of year to give. The nice part is if you give them a donation to help keep the organization going – there is someone that is matching the donations up to $10,000. What a wonderful gesture. You should have gotten an email with the details on Friday the 5th.

Morgan Julia Designs is also doing a charity deal called A Stitch of Strength. The canvas below comes in 2 versions and 20% of the proceeds will be given to American Cancer Society. Another way to give this season is thru Evergreen Needlepoint. They are doing Charts for Charity which benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The time has finally come – the end of an era – Melissa Shirley is retiring after 46 years of designing needlepoint !! Yikes! One of the most beloved designers, but fear not – the company is not going out of business. The employees of the company will continue to produce and sell all of her wonderful canvases. She plans on going back to painting on surfaces without holes !! I am sure everyone in the needlework community wishes her well.

The very well known needlepoint shop in Dallas, Chaparral, has had a lot of issues !! The store is closed due to health issues by it’s owner Heidi. She was planning on moving her operation to Tennessee and becoming an online only store. She had a moving company pack up all her things along with the store – her entire inventory. Along the way the truck caught on fire – everything was lost !! At least no one got hurt. If you haven’t gotten a call from her then your finishing was still with the finishers. How devastating, she is starting all over again. We only wish her well and the best of luck.

Penny Linn has a new Nantucket Stroll Village that she just launched. Bet they are fun to stitch and you can do what ever ones appeal to you. NEW CLUBS – sort of !!! The first one is The Needlepointer in conjunction with Needlepoint Now magazine is doing the Leaf Wreath. The club starts in March/April and will last 6 months. What’s Happening at NJNA 11/22/25

The meeting on Wed was fabulous. We had a large attendance and no one walked away without having a new appreciation for Toni Gerdes. I was asked several times how someone could talk about one stitch – well, not only did she, but I think there were several hoping to find some of Mary Rhodes patterns by the end of the talk. They were so beautiful and contemporary. Mary Rhodes authored several books of which many are still on the market as used if your interested. What a GREAT talk. Next month is a holiday celebration game and stitch in – no pressure !

Have you checked out the “Spring Fling”? There is still time to register because after all, the classes don’t start until April !! Registration closes on Nov 26 but by then your in the middle of the holiday. Check out the offerings and hopefully there is something your interested in AND it’s not sold out.

The new Needle Pointers magazine is about to hit your mailbox with the Nov/Dec 2025 issue. As usual it’s bright and colorful and packed with lots to read and admire. This issue in particular has a local needlepoint store to us in the “Shop Hop” article. They spotlighted “Ridgewood Needlepoint”. The Tale of 2 Stitchers canvas is amazing – I want to know how each did the bubbles !! LOL This magazine is a wonderful part of being a member of ANG. You can check it out online at the ANG web site if you can’t wait for the “snail”. While your at it – don’t forget to renew your membership. Earlier is always better and they now have options.

The Woodlawn Needlework Show registration is now open. NJNA will be participating in the show as usual. Go online to the Woodlawn web site to register the pieces you want to enter. You have until 2/1/26 to register and NJNA will coordinate getting the pieces to and from the exhibit. Linda M recently sent an email about it. Thanks to Sharon B. for the interesting update on Kreinik thread. Probably one of the most widely used threads and soon it will be in the LNS on a more reliable basis. Here is what she found out from the new owner – Rainbow Gallery : We have been waiting for 10 new high-speed braiding machines to arrive from Europe for several months: they were delayed due to manufacturer adjustments. After that and time to ship via boat and clear customs and tariffs, they didn’t get here until middle of October. It takes some time to set everything up, arrange electrical acccess, and get connected/started, then building up stock, but we’re on it. These 10 machines are equivalent to 40 old Kreinik machines, and we have 10 more on order. We know it has been a long wait for both Kreinik and Rainbow Gallery threads, and these additions will help dramatically.

Talking about thread Rittenhouse Needlepoint is now carrying a new thread – Pirate + Robin. This is a hand dyed 6 strand cotton floss that is variegated along with deep solid colors !! They say the thread is softer than most so it’s a pleasure to stitch with. Moore Stitching has some new people in their line up of famous people to stitch. My Ina Garten was fun to do and someone else I know did Lucy. She came out adorable with French knots for her hair !! Penny Linn owner Krista has incredible energy for a mother and small business owner that is looking to open another store besides the flagship one in CT. One of the newest items hitting the stores are coasters. When you think of it – they are small so they are a quick stitch. Many of the coasters in acrylic you can swap them out for new designs. They also make a great gift. I was looking at Needlepoint .com and they had holiday ones along with different flowers and seashells…. Choices, choices, choices ! And there are Sales, Sales, Sales everywhere !

The next most popular thing these days is Mah Jong !! Many needlepoint stores are having evening stitchin’s with Mah Jong tables going too. Mah Jong canvases seemed to be same old, same old until I saw these at the Wool and The Floss. Let’s just say – new and different !! Someone I know showed me an unusual “ORT” holder. How cute is this? I believe Home Depot also has them but they don’t have a lid like the Lowe’s version. Smaller than a coffee cup and very inexpensive – they make a great stocking stuffer for all kinds of things – even ort’s !!

What’s Happening at NJNA 10/25/25

We had our meeting this week and the Sea Jelly is much nicer in person. I can also tell you that it stitches up very quickly – mine is almost finished. A fun program! Next month we have a lecture by Toni Gerdes on the Rhodes Stitch. Having seen this before I look forward to seeing it again. It’s no wonder so many people want to take her classes.

It’s getting to be that time of year again. Time to decide who will be taking the time to help make NJNA a fun place to be !! Everyone has decided to continue volunteering in their roles except for 2. We are in need of a secretary and someone for programs. Secretary can be done from anywhere. We now use AI to transcribe the meetings so the secretary narrows it down to an outline once a month and that is it. The person or persons doing programs do not start until mid year and the chapter already has an outline of what programs will be for the rest of the year. There is always someone around to answer a question or help out. This to can be done from a distance. We look forward to hearing from people that would like to work with the guild to make it a fun time for all. Contact the President – Noelle and she can give you more info. !

Thread Alert !!! We all know about Straw Silk but now (according to Rittenhouse Needlepoint) Caron Collection Thread is discontinuing their “Snow” line. I am hoping it’s just their yarn collection – snow is a great thread to stitch with.

Tips & Tricks: If you do ornaments as gifts or for yourself, it’s a nice thing to put the date on. It’s expensive to have the back embroidered so the next best thing is a charm ! Sometimes I attach it to the canvas for the finisher to stitch it on or I do it myself when it comes back. They come in numerous colors and are available on – yes, you guessed it – Amazon. Go in with friends for a few dollars – you get more than 100 in a bag !!

What’s Happening at NJNA 10/11/25

Are you ready to stitch the Sea Jelly ???? I have been waiting for months !! LOL. Jacqui C. asked that you stitch the circle (it went really fast !) This is a cute project that is going to stitch up quickly. Next month is a “Must See” – we are going to have a fabulous designer, Toni Gerdes. She is going to do a talk on the Rhodes Stitch. Having heard it before she does a wonderful job – don’t miss it ! I had computer problems which is why this is a week off BUT, so much happened in that time you will have extra to read!

It’s that time of year again ! Time for all the shops and designers to get together so that we all have lots of new projects and gadgets to buy !! Also known as the Autumn Needlepoint Reunion which is held Oct. 17-19 in Frisco TX. You should be seeing some peaks of the new items coming out but if not – here are a few:

Interesting New Book out ! – “Make It Yours Book 2 Extraordinary Fonts” – this is an exclusive to The Wool and The Floss. This is a sequel to Krissy Johnson’s “Make It Yours Book 1 The Essentials”. I have not heard anything good about Straw Silk coming back soon. People are stripping stores of it as it is not in production right now. A great fiber to stitch with but we are all going to need a substitute. Who knew Straw Silk had a “Sister Fiber!” It’s called Soie Tissee (pronounced swah t-say).  The designer of this thread has worked to perfect a signature dyeing technique that allows a beautiful graduation of hues on each strand. NEW THREAD ALERT ! Radiance 13 has been released. This adds to the 18 and Mini already on shelves. There is 102 colors to choose from and you can also get bags of special editions with 6 spools in a bag. I have heard some people say that this unravels so it’s hard to work with. According to M’s Canvas house you need to put some Bee’s wax on the end and it should be fine. Worth a try as it is so pretty stitched. There is Good News and Bad News ! The Bad News first – Stitch Stash Darien CT has closed it’s store. It was just to much for Patty going back and forth from DE to CT. Now for the GOOD News !!! Morgan Julia Designs is opening up a “brick and mortar” store in Jersey City NJ !! She had a very successful “Pop Up” in Manhattan this past weekend with close to 1500 people stopping by. If that good news was not enough – THERE IS MORE !! One of our favorite stores in this area Stitch By Stich in NY is moving to bigger quarters. They just celebrated 21 years in business and decided to give themselves AND US a treat by moving to a space almost double what their store is now. It’s That Time Of Year Again! KC Needlepoint is calling on all stitchers to “Stitch & Make a Difference. The Greater Kansas City Needlepoint Guild has been working with KC Needlepoint since 2015. Hearts stitched from all over are used on the doors of recently passed residents so people passing by will give the family the time they need. The Hearts for Hospice program gives the mourning family the heart that was placed on the door as a remembrance. If you would like to stitch a heart for the program KC Needlepoint will finish it and make sure the program receives it. Tips & Tricks: I have used the self finishing products out there and they are great but you definitely could use a little help at times getting your canvas in. KC Needlepoint has a tool to help (though it looks like something my manicurist uses!) The pointed end helps create the gap so you can get your canvas in. The flat end helps smooth out and straighten the canvas so it sits nicely in the item. What’s Happening at NJNA 7/26/25

This months meeting was all about chatting and what is coming up and the best part was Noelle telling us about her being in the new issue of Needle Pointers magazine !! She again was one of the “Tale of Two Stitcher’s”. If you look at the original canvas you will see how she changed the perspective of the canvas. Instead of a more side view it is more straight on. She put in flowers where there were none, changed colors and created a spectacular piece. Patty W. did the other version and did a fine job also. That feature by Linda M. is one of the best parts of the magazine. Make sure you read it and look at all the wonderful ways a canvas can be done. Congrats. Noelle, you would have all our votes !!

Watch for a famous designer in a Tale of 2 Stitchers coming up.

We also had a quick chat about the up coming sea jelly and what is needed to stitch it. Our next workshop is still in the planning stages but it should be in March 2026 with a famous designer that many people voted for in the questionnaire. Keep an eye out for the final reveal ! The other important item is that with the seminar coming in August – there will be no August meeting. Wishing everyone going to “NOLA” a wonderful time.

As you know – ANG has had lots of Educational Offerings until now ! They are in the middle of revamping all their distance learning opportunities. They have not given a hint as to when we will see all these new projects and learning options so stay tuned !

Tips and Tricks: Speaking of seminar – I heard that the instructors have put in their letter to the students that they must bring “Cordless Flat Irons” for your threads. Unless you have a local beauty supply shop near you the easiest way to get one is – yup – you guessed it – Amazon. When you look for one double check that it is cordless. Many show up in the listings but are not actually cordless. Smaller is always better. They have various features such as different temperatures, locking handles, gauge of remaining battery life, etc. Go with the price your most comfy with and remember to get a silicone mat to place it on while it’s hot. You want smooth but not burnt Neon Rays !!

This coming week is our July meeting – already ! With vacations and holidays we are going to have a calm “stitch in” this time. Jacqui C. will also discuss what threads are needed for the “Sea Jelly”. Come relax and stitch with us !

ANG has introduced the new Quarterly Stitch. At first glance I thought this was a quick easy small project – then I read about it ! It’s called “Ottoman Triad II” and was designed by Denise Beusen. It was inspired by embroideries of the Ottoman Empire. Have you ever done a “Bukhara” stitch? How about the “Atma” stitch or the “Turkish triangular stitch”? It does say this project is for advanced intermediate stitchers. Makes you want to look up the project and see what an “Atma” stitch is !! They say it can be finished as a box top or framed. If you live in the NY Metro area – get excited !! Morgan Julia Designs is going to do a “Pop Up” store in SoHo NYC. Her mother worked in a knitting/needlepoint store and she helped out starting at the age of 9. Our last meeting was great !!! Jacqui C. did a fabulous presentation on different things to use in finishing your pieces. New and different ideas to say the least. We also were told about a lovely woman, Judith C. who decided she has WAY too much in her stash and donated some lovely canvases to our guild. Rosie put together a presentation of them and there will be an auction with the proceeds going to the guild for future programs and speakers. Of course, you have to be a member to bid on the pieces and we would love to have you as a member to enjoy so many great opportunities for learning and social get togethers. And the countdown begins – 21 days until this years seminar in “NOLA”. Hopefully you are one of the participants and are ready for a great time. So many classes to take and lots to see and do. It takes a “village” to do these seminars and even if you are not attending they have the Pelican frame weight you can order by mail, or if your in the area you can go see the exhibit, shop the Expo and bid in the silent auction not to mention, hang with friends. The new July/August Needle Pointers magazine is about to hit your mail box and the cover is perfect !!! Check it out online on the ANG web site – it is full of great articles as always. The effort into putting this magazine together shows every issue. I can’t wait to read about the article on threads and a new book out. They visited – West End Needlepoint for the shop hop. The Tale of Two Stitchers is all about flowers this time and as usual, Melita takes us back in time to forgotten treasures in the archives. What a great Bargello project they put in and the first thing I had to do was look closely at what beads they used for the lemons !!! What do you know – Stitch Palettes is back !! After a year and 7 months this free lance web designer was so overwhelmed by her work load she decided to scale back a bit and bring Stitch Palettes back. She creates such wonderful combinations of color for stitchers and provides the DMC numbers to go with the grouping of threads. She also has a way to do your own grouping for a specific project along with a lot of other useful information. On the last blog I was VERY excited to tell everyone about Moore Stitching’s new canvas of the Barfoot Contessa (of course I bought her!). What’s Happening at NJNA 5/31/25

If you missed Chris Loudon’s talk on Bargello you missed a wonderful presentation. She incorporated several of the projects NJNA members stitched into her talk and she had lots more information she spoke about. If you belong to other guild’s she will be doing it again so you have another chance to hear her. I have to say, it was one of the best programs this year AND we have lots more to come. Another reason to become a member of NJNA. (I can’t wait for the sea jelly quick project) In November we are having Toni Gerdes talking about Rhodes Stitches. Lot’s of other things as well to look forward to.

ANG seminar will be here before you know it. Registration is closed now as the festivities start on August 19 thru the 24th. You still have time to sign up to exhibit one of your finishes ! The deadline is June 27th. For $25 you can also have your piece critiqued with a written assessment. There will be ribbons and awards for a variety of categories. Morgan Julia Designs and Penny Linn have some great destination canvases that are new. The Napa Valley, Paris, Tucson, Crab and Lobster Schack’s etc. A great place to stitch one of these cuties is during their Nantucket Needlepoint Weekend. Tips and Tricks: I was taking a class with Dawn Donnelly and she had a wonderful tip when your working with Neon Rays. We all know how that fiber can shred/fray on the ends. Before you start to use it, put the end flat on top of a glue stick and hold down with your finger or a small piece of paper on top and pull it off. The end of the fiber now has a small amount of glue that will dry quickly. Once dry you can stitch with the glued end by the needle – it’s going to get cut off at the end. Sue C said in that class that she regularly glues the end before putting the card away so she is ready for the next time she uses it. Good tip from both Dawn and Sue C.

S&J Designs sent an email saying that Zweigart (the maker of our needlepoint canvas) has just raised the price by 10% to 15%. On top of that there is a 10% tariff now so be prepared to see the price of our supplies get more expensive. She says they are not increasing the price until the next shipment. Morgan Julia Design’s shows a Thread of the Month and this time it is a thread I have never noticed before but the results are so pretty. It’s called Bradley’s Balloons by ThreadworX #1154. It’s a hand dyed cotton floss with so many colors it looks like it vibrates in the skein but when stitched it’s just pretty !!! In the picture she did the skip tent stitch. What’s Happening at NJNA 3/22/25

We had our March meeting this past week and if you missed it – you missed a lot ! First there was the show and tell with a design in 2 colorways. Side by side was an amazing difference. I think we could have talked about that all night! The main attraction was the presentation by Debbie Rowley. She did her talk called “Anchors Away”. Having taken a class with her I can tell you that she is the nicest and laid back person. When she was having technical trouble she just went with the flow, did not get rattled. We all learned that you can both start and end all your threads on the front of your canvas. She went over numerous ways to start and stop a thread. I think we all learned something. She also sent ahead of the meeting a hand out so you have something to refer to if you want to give a new way of starting and stopping a thread a try. AND, she also allowed NJNA to record her talk. It will be on our web site so you can go back and watch it again – BUT – you have to be a member to do that. Just another reason to join in on our fun and become a member of NJNA. You gotta be in it to watch it !!!

Jacqui C. is getting her ducks in a row for programs later this year. She sent out an email for those of you that want to participate in the October and November programs. October is the Medusa Sea Jelly (I can’t wait for this one). It would look great all year round in a coastal home and of course on a holiday tree. This is a fund raiser for another chapter so it’s $40 and comes as a pdf with a list of threads needed and instructions. The other program is with Toni Gerdes. She does a lecture and mini workshop on the Rhodes stitch. The $15 kit comes with the instructions and 8×8 canvas. She shows how to use the Rhodes stitch for several projects. Jacqui needs to order in advance to have all the materials in time. She needs payment by May and of course, if you have any questions, email her.

The 2025 seminar registration is now open to all and closes April 30. The seminar runs from August 19 – 24 at the New Orleans Sheraton Hotel. I am sure there are closed classes already. Just in case your not sure of the location of the seminar you just have to look at the cover of the March/April Needle Pointers magazine. If you go to the web site you can look at it online. Make sure you have time to spend as it is another packed issue. A review about Needle Point podcasts, a preview of a new book about to be released by an ANG member that is a novel about a needle point store. The Tale of 2 Stitchers will keep you looking at the stitched items for a long time, they are both so beautiful. Shop Hop, how to organize your projects, a thread reveal and more – and more – and more !! I may not be able to wait for the snail !!

Thanks to Cathryn C for a look at a new stand for needlework – yes you can have more than one!! This one is a bit different as it is very small – great for travel. It’s also made of wood so it is much lighter than some of the items we all carry around. The “left field” part to this is that it is manufactured by a Ukrainian company called Velke Potoky. When folded it’s 11 inches long and 5 inches wide with a weight of under 2 lbs. Sounds perfect for a seminar or travel. It comes with a bag to travel with to keep it clean and safe. Now – it’s not meant for some of those giant projects we work on but it can accommodate bars up to about 14 inches. Now for the down side (there is always one !) the cost is $360 !
