What’s Happening at NJNA 9/23/23

Standard

This week we had our monthly meeting. There was a rather full house for the Zoom presentation given by Casandra Prescott and her daughter Nandra, owners of Sundance Beads. They have been in business since 1979 and are still creating amazing beads and embellishments. They now offer over 400 different color seed beads never mind all the shapes and sizes. On the call were also designers Jill Rigoli and Barbara Elmore to show how many options these beads offer to enhance your canvases. After that presentation I think the number of options is only limited by your imagination !! I never knew they had all the other enhancements never mind how to use them. Just another reason to join in our fun here at NJNA ! Sundance Designs Online

Get ready for next month’s meeting – it’s a “Stash Buster” ! The meeting will be all about PLAID ! I noticed that wine colors are coming in for the fall (You remember them from the 80’s) so we at NJNA are bringing back plaid !! I did not mean to date us but… Plaid can be a tricky thing to do but so rewarding especially if the pattern is related to your birth date. You will also be able to use this nifty skill for the Nov meeting when we will be doing a name tag. Now that is subtle personalization !

ANG has 2 announcements – The BAD is that the Sept/Oct issue of Needlepointers magazine is delayed. The GOOD is that the Auction raised an incredible amount. They wish to thank everyone involved !!

A New Store Opened! Penny Linn started out in 2020 in a one bedroom apartment in Manhattan NY and has now opened a store in Westport CT. I have shown you her adorable designs, magnets, bags etc. before. Now you can go see it in person – just another reason for a road trip ! She has lots of small canvases and something for every level of stitching. https://pennylinndesigns.com/collections/all

And ANOTHER New Store! This one is located in Locust Valley on the North Shore of Long Island NY. “The Red Thread Atelier” is having The Grand Opening on September 27th. They will be having weekly evening stitching on Tuesdays. Good Luck to both stores ! Collections – The Red Thread Atelier

Stitch By Stitch in NY has been at it again – they have the redecorating fever. Having been to the store – it’s all for the good !! They have now put in new flooring this time – a big difference. They have also launched the new web site which is much more user friendly. They are have a big retreat coming in Feb 2024, a new club coming, and an exclusive Raymond Crawford NYC wreath… They always work hard to have something new going on there. Jane of Chilly Hollow is correct – it’s a dangerous store $ – but so worth the trip !! Find Your Focus | Stitch by Stitch Needlepoint

So many people were affected by the tragedy in Maui HI that Needle Paint is looking to help. Thru the end of this year they will be donating 20% of the proceeds of their Hawaii themed canvases to the Maui Food Bank. They have lovely colorful ornaments to choose from if you would like to help. https://www.needlepaint.com/maui-needlepoint

Ridgewood Needlepoint has an interesting exclusive by VNG canvases. They have several deals involved with this offer. If you buy the canvas and threads they will give you the stitch guide for free. You can buy it all separately plus they are going to have 2 class sessions (Jan and Feb) if you would like to stitch the canvas that way. No matter what you choose Stephanie is there to help. Home (ridgewoodneedlepoint.com)

There is new basics class being given by BeStitched and it will be done in 3 sessions. The canvas being used is by Gayla Elliot !!!! The classes involve not only stitches but basic beading and ribbon work. The dates are 11/11, 12/16 and 1/6 for your “Burro Basics !” It has to be a fun class with all that opportunity for embellishment.! https://bestitchedneedlepointshop.com/collections/online-classes/products/burro-basics

There are 2 new clubs about to start. The Needlepointer has an interesting Zodiac canvas. They expect to start in November and it goes for 7 months. Each month you will get a stitch guide and thread packet. I can hear the 5th Dimension’s song playing in the background !! https://www.theneedlepointer.com/zodiac-wheeldiv-idclubsubtitleopen-enrollmentdiv/p8503668?cse=nl0923?cse=nl0923&goal=0_3621358244-174b96f46b-69343533&mc_cid=174b96f46b&mc_eid=2e6039e84f

Bestitched has an unusual Halloween club starting in October. There will be 4 canvases from Spellbound Stitchery and the stitch guides were done by Lauren Kessler. It’s called “Pretty in Witchy Pink” Great for a beginner! https://bestitchedneedlepointshop.com/products/pretty-in-witchy-pink-club

Atlantic Blue Canvases have such a cute new line of “Hobby Santas”. They have more than 30 different hobbies along with some stitch guides. They remind me of the ever popular gnomes you see by many designers !! Since there are 105 days left until this Xmas it’s time to snap them up – for NEXT YEAR !! LOL

Hobby Santas

NEWS FLASH – DMC Threads posted on Linkedin that they have bought Anchor thread !!!! The two lines will continue to be separate as DMC says it will take a year to transition Anchor into their line up. The previous owner will stay on to help with the transition and manage the brand. DMC wants to be the #1 needlecraft brand. DMC

Now for some sad passing’s in the needlepoint industry – Lois Caron has passed away. She is the founder and President of the Caron Collection. She created beautiful hand dyed threads for several thread lines and distributes them all over the world. She will be greatly missed but the family intends to keep the company running. About The CARON Collection (caron-net.com)

The second passing is Liz Goodrick – Dillon. She was well known for her elaborate Christmas Stockings. A lover of nature explains all the backgrounds on her designs. She was also a designer of scenes on puzzles, fabric and greeting cards. She too will be missed.

TIPS AND TRICKS I have 2 – the first is from our own Melita G.- if you use Evertite Stretcher Bars you are well aware of the tool you need to tighten them. Melita is right – I would not want to go past the TSA in the airport with that tool. She has an inexpensive work around – use a 3/32″ Hex Dogging Key – ugh – why didn’t we all think of that?? Did you even know what that was? – I didn’t ! They come in a pack of 10 from, where else but Amazon for $9. Melita keeps them where ever she thinks she will need them. It’s smaller so it’s easier to carry in your bag of tools. Thank you Melita !

The 2nd one is from KC Needlepoint – do you have an “Un-Stitcher” ? No – it’s not a seem ripper. It’s actually a quilting tool that works well when you are trying to rip out a section you have stitched without cutting the canvas. Looks like another handy dandy tool to have ! Aren’t we all about our tools??? https://www.kcneedlepoint.com/products/the-un-stitcher?_pos=1&_sid=564cf2108&_ss=r

Who was that Famous Stitcher? That was Kelly Starke. From what I read she is everywhere these days doing her classes on how to finish ornaments. The pandemic created such a backlog for finishers she is easing their burden. Of course she is about much more than that, just look at her web site. Home (starkeartdesigns.com)

Congratulations to 2 of our members for being recognized thru EGA at their seminar in Boston. Both Cathryn and Melita were given recognition. Cathryn for receiving the Golden Thread award for the Metropolitan Region and Melita for having become a certified Master Craftsman. Check out the blog before this one as Rosie did a wonderful job explaining along with pictures of the ladies – you go ladies !!

I am sure we all can’t wait for this months meeting. A reminder that this is a zoom only meeting as we will be meeting a representative from Sundance Beads. They will be going thru the process of how the beads are made along with lots of other topics. Have your popcorn at the ready !!

ANG has 2 new stitch guides for their “50 For 50” fundraiser. They are looking to raise $250k to continue their mission of Teaching, Promoting, and Preserving the Art of Needlepoint for another 50 years. You can still get the first offerings thru the web site as well. Of course you have to be in it to buy it !!!! https://www.needlepoint.org/default.aspx

I must give a shout out to Jacqui C – she has been most generous with donating so many materials to the Cancer Survivor Program at Holy Name Hospital. We had lots to celebrate at our One Year Party and Jacqui has again given another donation from her dear friends estate. Having found some of her work in a box – we would all have learned so much from her – she was a beautiful stitcher. Thank you again Jacqui for your generosity.

On another health related note – check out Colonial Needle as they are having a Breast Cancer Promotion as the disease is personal to them. By buying any of their 6 canvases 100% of the sale is a donation to research. Colonial Needle Company

The Queen Charlotte ANG chapter is having a fund raiser. There are 2 kits available from the chapter. Jeanne Saward is the chapters Secretary and in charge of the promotion. I can attest to her efficiency as I bought the pumpkin and it came faster than you could blink. It has so many color combos that can be done- it is something for everyone’s taste. It comes with a color stitch guide, line drawn canvas and even special thread for the pumpkins stem. The bunny also has a color stitch guide and line drawn canvas. What a neat guild project and they have group pricing !!! The price of the kits will go up after September so go for it now !! Contact Jeanne at jeanne.saward@gmail.com and she will give you all the particulars. I can’t wait to do mine !!!

The Needle Artists By The Sea chapter are also having a fundraiser to help sponsor the Shoreline Stitchers event. It is a judged needle arts competition in Sourthern CA held every 2 years. To help with the cost of the event they are having a zoom class for the cutest “Medusa Sea Jelly Ornament” that has many opportunities for different colorways. Here is the information: SSS Fundraising Event_sept2023_063023 (needleartistsbythesea.org)

Up an coming items to watch for – sometime in the spring ANG is going to have a Virtual Seminar. They will be sharing more information soon. The Dallas Market is in the middle of next month – lock up those wallets ! Also, Needlepoint Now magazine has revealed their 2024 year long project and it’s all about “HOME”

It seems that some of our favorite stores have revamped their web sites. Stitch By Stitch in NY updated their store with new paint and rugs so now it was time for their web site. It was a big overhaul and it is much more light and airy looking like the store. Be careful, I got sucked in almost immediately it’s so enticing !! Find Your Focus | Stitch by Stitch Needlepoint

Unwind Studio has also had a redesign. They have simple yet fun items from canvases to accessories. Nice choices and colorful for beginner and advanced. https://www.unwind.studio/collections/needlepoint-kits-canvases

Morgan Julia has just come out with new acrylic containers that go with their cute “Chill Pill” and Bar Cart canvases. While looking at their site though – ugh – I found some more adorable items. https://morganjuliadesigns.com/

New Clubs !! The Enriched Stitch has a Sea Creatures club that starts at the end of Sept/Begining of Oct. Each month you will receive a canvas, threads, embellishments and a stitch guide. https://enrichedstitch.myshopify.com/products/abstract-sea-creatures-club Emily’s Stitching has a bi-monthly club of Halloween costumed owls by Love You More. Canvases, stitch guides and thread option but if you buy the threads you get a bonus canvas with stitch guide. They just make you smile ! https://www.emilysstitchery.com/product/halloween-owl-club/15536?utm_source=sqmktg_email

Atlantic Blue has come out with 35 new canvases. Many are small quick stitches like a library card, cookies or Flavor town hot dog. There is also a bunch of “Kaleidoscopes” of different items. Of course they have lots to look at on their web site !! https://www.atlanticbluecanvas.com/collections/summer-2023-drop?_kx=_6T6ZEqw3FzRTyL6whjCxpBoWNmvx7M7ogeQHpVHlzk%3D.SdsruM

Can you believe it – Queen Elizabeth II passed away a year ago on September 8th !! Where did all that time go to? She is still a popular needlepoint canvas. Queen Elizabeth Needlepoint Canvas – Etsy

Tips and Tricks: From Diversions Needlepoint in CO – suggestions for when you are stitching a dark color on dark canvas – an eye killer ! 1. Stitch outside if you can – daylight shows the canvas intersections better. 2. Use the best indoor lighting you can. 3. Use a magnifier. 4. use a light or very bright color cloth under your stitching – the color comes thru the canvas and makes the holes easier to see. 5. The pattern of a decorative stitch will assist in directing the stitcher to the next stitch location on a dark canvas.

Who was that Famous Stitcher? That was Patricia Sone. Like many of us, she has been stitching since her early teens. Being from Dallas Texas she worked and taught for many years in a needlepoint shop before going out on her own. She has become well known for her witty and graphic designs

This month’s meeting was a stitch in BUT, you don’t want to miss next month’s meeting – for sure !! We are going to have a presentation by Sundance Beads, one of the industries leading suppliers of beads, beading thread and various embellishments. This meeting will be a Zoom Only program as the library will not stay open late in if the presentation runs long. Get a beverage, some popcorn and settle in at your computer screen for an enjoyable evening. Just another reason to join NJNA – we have the best programs !!!

It’s that time again !! The ANG Summer Auction is now open!! It runs only thru August 28th. Look all you like but you need to be a member of ANG to bid. Hurry and check out what they have before it’s too late. Snooze and you lose ! https://ang.schoolauction.net/summer2023/catalog

Have you a piece of needlework that is spectacular and you would like to exhibit it? The President of the Delaware Seashore Chapter of ANG just happens to be a member of NJNA! Brenda C. and her guild is involved with the Rehoboth Beach Museum’s 11th Annual Needlework Exhibit. The exhibit runs from Sept 16 to Nov 12 and they would love to have your entry. Your entry will be given a critique from a NAN certified judge and there will be ribbons awarded. Here is the application and even if you don’t send in a piece of needlework it’s a nice fall trip. https://rehobothbeachmuseum.org/index.php/calendar/148-needlework-exhibit-opens

Make a BIG NOTE someplace – Saturday October 21 is Local Needlepoint Shop Day !! The day we all try to support our brick and mortar shops. We all love the many things they offer along with seeing the color and texture in person. They usually have something unexpected that we can’t resist. Check with your LNS for any sales or events.

I am sure we have all seen the horrible destruction on the island of Maui. All that history is gone. They need so much to rebuild it all that they will need help. Elizabeth Bradley is one of several needlepoint companies that is pitching in. They are donating 50% of all the sales from 2 of their kits purchased thru Sunday the 27th of August. The donation will go directly to the Red Cross of Hawaii. The kits are of just stunning Hibiscus flowers native to Hawaii. https://americas.elizabethbradley.com/collections/help-for-hawaii

Another charity event going on is thru The Stitching Studio in VA. They are accepting items you would like to “destash” during the months of August and September. The sale of these items will be donated to “The Doorways” which is a nonprofit that provides lodging and support to patients and their loved ones who need to be close to the hospital. All canvas donors are put into a drawing for a $25 gift certificate to the store. Call the store for more details at (804) 269-0355 Home (thestitchingstudiova.com)

YIKES – Stitch Stash was HACKED !! And Patti Hoffmann is angry ! This is not the first time so her Face Book presence is disabled for the time being. She also asks that everyone unfollow her personal FB account and the Stitch-Stash one. She is still on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/stitchstashnew/ and you can go to her web page at: Stitch-Stash Needlepoint

The Needlepointer has a new club called “Splendid Starlight” It will start some time in October and is a collection of 6 ornaments based on the Rainbow Gallery Splendor Designer Collection colors. They are very interesting designs that come each month with the canvas, threads and stitch guide. The patterns are intricate – very different. https://www.theneedlepointer.com/splendid-starlightdiv-idclubsubtitleopen-enrollmentdiv/p8503447?cse=nl0826&goal=0_3621358244-4e3fcaf226-69343533&mc_cid=4e3fcaf226&mc_eid=2e6039e84f

If you follow Ridgewood Needlepoint you know that Adrienne and Stephanie do “New Stitch Monday” They are about to start a new canvas with a choice of Christmas or Hanukkah by JP Needlepoint. The Christmas one is so colorful and both have so many options for stitches. Follow their blog to see how they stitch these 2 beautiful canvases. Contact the store for more info – Home (ridgewoodneedlepoint.com)

I know a few people that are going to love this one – Stitcher’s Garden in Chicago is going to have a class on Sept 2 (but I’m sure you can buy the canvases) taught by the owner of Chaparrel Dallas, Heidi Henrichs. It’s a tour of Mrs. Clauses closet and the tags from her clothes. She will be teaching the “Chanel Tag” but there are other famous designers in the collection. https://www.stitchersgardenil.com/module/class/509933/mrs-claus-closet—chanel-tag

If your more sports minded- be it Pickle ball or Mah Jong (lol) – check out Atlantic Blue for adorable canvases no matter what sport you enjoy! https://www.atlanticbluecanvas.com/collections/sports

If you haven’t looked at Moore Stitching you are missing a blast from the past that I am sure everyone can relate to – Royal Dansk cookie tins – who didn’t enjoy that assortment of butter cookies ?!?! They have so many cute canvases including an array of clutch purses that are a difficult choice to pick just one. On the other hand – it’s nice to have 2 or 3 !!! https://moorestitching.com/?mc_cid=10b998f18a&mc_eid=4429aac277

Are you wishing to try ribbons but feel you need some help? They are a bit intimidating unless you watch someone do it – so look at Emily’s Stitchery’s web site for a Zoom class on ribbons and beading techniques. It’s called Ribbons 101 but there is a lot more to it and it includes everything you need to make the picture below. It’s going to be held September 23rd from 10 AM to 4 PM. https://www.emilysstitchery.com/product/ribbons-101-with-lisa-abrams-zoom-/14043

If you enjoy classes you want to check out BeStitched. They have a whole list of different classes that you can take individually via Zoom or your can buy a season pass that covers a years worth. The best part is if you miss a class they are all recorded and posted to their web site needlepointfix. This list is just until the end of the year! Lots to learn !! https://bestitchedneedlepointshop.com/products/learn-with-lisa-2023

And now for a very sad note – Annie Lane has passed away. She is known for her quirky chickens, sheep, dogs and cows. They all bring a smile to your face ! Great sense of humor and will be missed. Wellesley Needlepoint has licensed some of her collection if you are looking for a canvas along with Annie’s Etsy shop. https://www.wellesleyneedlepoint.com/product-category/annie-lane-canvases/https://www.etsy.com/shop/AnnieLane?ref=shop-header-name&listing_id=1256840700

Who was that Famous Stitcher? That is Cathy Rapoza – the owner of Alice Peterson Company. So many wonderful subjects in her line of canvases. The women with different views in their glasses, the backs of various women, beautiful children’s canvases and the fabulous Gayla Elliott women.

Chaparral in Dallas is doing a wonderful event to encourage younger people to enjoy the craft of needlepoint – they are having “Millennial Stitch Night” this Tuesday. You go Chaparral !! https://ndlpt.com/

Chaparral also has the cutest ornament so many of us can relate too – a Little Tykes car! Bestitched has a canvas like nothing I have seen before and they have made it a new class. It’s called “Marbles in Motion” This is definitely for an advanced stitcher. The class is broken up into 3 online classes and they all are explaining unique and captivating beaded textures. No surprise that the canvas is by Colors of Praise. https://bestitchedneedlepointshop.com/products/marbles-in-motion-class

Clubs, Clubs and even more Clubs have emerged !! Something for everyone – even if you never intended to do one !!!! Let’s start with the adorable Enriched Stitch Seasonal Wagons Club. Each canvas is only 6X5 but when you look at them – there are all sorts of ways to embellish the dresses. This past meeting was all about our guild’s Woodlawn submissions. Woodlawn celebrated their 60th anniversary this year showing and judging needlework. This years theme was “The Joy Of Needlework” – and we certainly enjoy !! We sent in 31 pieces and again came away with several prizes including Barbara L’s Judge’s Choice Award for her “Cray Cray” bird and Melita G’s 2nd place for original design. We got to see pictures of other submissions and it was more incentive to again submit our work in 2024. Can’t wait to hear what the new theme will be.

Next month will be a “Stitch In” since so many will either be at seminar or on vacation. September however will be very interesting !! We will have a representative from Sundance Beads giving a talk about all their products. This may be a bit longer than our allotted time in the Library so this meeting will be a zoom only. Remember – you need to be a member to be a part of all our fun ! A shout out to our 2 new members: Tracy and Marissa – welcome ! We now have 63 Members – and counting !!

Our member Melita G is at it again ! Her designs “Diamond Bargello ” Flag Ornaments is the front page of the new Needlepointer’s Magazine. This July/August issue will be in your mailbox shortly but you can go online and read not only her article about how she came up with these beautiful ornaments BUT – she also has started a series of articles for this issue and upcoming issues called “Timeless Treasures from the Archives”. Her STOM this year is also very popular – where does she get the time to design? Check out the back cover of the magazine – an unusual fellow !

Just a note of reminder – set aside the first Saturday of January 2024 as this is when we will have our Holiday Luncheon. We had such a good time this last January that we are going to do it again ! Hope to see everyone there.

Outreach – Sue C and Jacqui are hitting the road again to the Somerset County Wellness Center, this time in Basking Ridge. They will again be explaining the art of needlepoint to the resident’s. On another note – a big thank you to Julie K. She donated 3 big bags of various supplies to the chapter and they will be going to the Cancer Support Group thru Holy Name Hospital. The women in this program are learning how to stitch for relaxation. They have been creating some very stunning pieces of work for first timers.

Here we are in the middle of a heat wave that could melt your shoes to the pavement and all I keep seeing is Christmas in July sales !! Everyone likes a good sale but I just want a cold drink in this weather! HOWEVER, Chaparral Needle Point has a new exclusive kit – Baby Sven the Reindeer – you gotta love that face. The kits ship mid October and include threads, embellishments, stitch guide and a project bag. Quick and easy as it’s a 5 inches round – doable for this year (particularly if you are taking the chapters finishing course – I’m just saying!). https://ndlpt.com/products/baby-sven-reindeer-kit?syclid=cj2kqgausvigrob88k00&utm_campaign=emailmarketing_129505362059&utm_medium=email&utm_source=shopify_email

Now for the sale – Atlantic Blue Canvas is having a Birthday Sale – TOMORROW ONLY ! Sunday July 30 starting at 9 AM. No codes needed as the prices will be marked. You get 31% off on canvases, bags, tools etc. Check it out in advance so you can make a list of what you want and don’t get shut out. https://www.atlanticbluecanvas.com/collections/birthday-sale?_kx=_6T6ZEqw3FzRTyL6whjCxpBoWNmvx7M7ogeQHpVHlzk%3D.SdsruM

Of course you need a magnet to hold your needle to the Dream House canvas so Oli Magnets has enough pink color choices you will be asking Ken to decide – LOL !! https://www.etsy.com/shop/OLIBLOCK?ref=shop_sugg_market&mc_cid=9e9a4e67bb&mc_eid=0087025bb4

If Pink and Red are your favorite colors then check out KC Needlepoint – their Annual Stitch Challenge is back. What a great way to learn new stitches and ugh – how to compensate ! There are 23 hearts with 23 different stitches in the 2023 challenge. The kit comes with a 13 count canvas, thread, stitch guide and needle. Since it’s a pre-order it will take a little time to arrive – so cute – so worth it. https://www.kcneedlepoint.com/collections/sct-designs/products/23-hearts-in-2023-kit?&utm_campaign=campaign%3A+Re+promote+hearts++%2864a1fe7bb8627e0c7aff19bc%29&utm_medium=email&utm_source=omnisend&omnisendContactID=61fc368aa1816e00226a532d

Now seriously – The Needlepoint Club House has some of the cutest Tooth Fairy Pillows I have seen. I also found something new in the way of fibers. If you haven’t stitched with Straw Silk you are missing out. Well, The Club House has Straw Silk Palettes with 5 different colors in a similar color way. They also have a lot of interesting and unique items on their web site – worth a look. https://www.needlepointclubhouse.com/collections/new-arrivals

Did you get all your fruits and vegetables in today? (not my favorite commercial) but I would gladly take one of Evergreen Needlepoint’s fruit eyeglass cases – it might be the heat but they look so cool and refreshing. You can also have them personalized. https://www.evergreenneedlepoint.com/collections/all-canvases

Evergreen also has a great bag to carry large projects. (I know someone that might fit in this bag it’s so big – lol – you know we love you !) https://www.evergreenneedlepoint.com/collections/accessories

TIPS AND TRICKS: Have you ever had something on your canvas that you would like to “disappear”? Presto White Out works ! No brushes or mess like with acrylic paints. Pin point accurate and it dries quickly – can’t ask for much more.

Who was that Famous Stitcher? That was Toni Randall – the owner of Whimsy and Grace. In September of 2020 she lost everything to a wild fire except a few possessions and her dog. The needlepoint community gave her a big hug and a helping hand to get back on her feet.

This month’s meeting is only days away. Remember to bring your dinner with you if your attending the meeting at the library as they are allowing you to again bring in food. The meeting will start about 7:15 to allow for clean up time. The topic will be a review of the Woodlawn submissions this year. Our August meeting will be a “laid back” stitch in.

It’s almost here !! The ANG Atlanta Seminar starts August 10th. Please make sure you have contacted Linda M with your contact information. She is also looking for which classes you are attending. I can’t wait to hear all about it and see what everyone comes back with.

The new July/Aug Needle Pointers magazine will be out soon. They are looking for participants in the “Tale of Two Stitchers” column. They have three interesting canvases to be stitched. Maybe you would be interested in doing one???? Each one has lots of opportunists for a spectacular take on the picture. Go to the next picture for more information.

Back in March / April 2022 Needle Pointers magazine had a cover project that was fascinating. It was called Fibonacci Swirls and it was shown in beige colors. If you are a member of Cyberpointers – they are going to be doing classes on it in March 2024 for free !! You have to register (starting Feb 15 2024) but check out some of the colorways they are showing it in. A great way to learn new stitches and have a stunning piece in the end. Gotta love those Jean Hilton stitches.

A last reminder that the Edwardian Needle will be closed starting Wed July 26th. Make sure you have enough thread to keep you going as she will be closed approximately 3 weeks. Pam also has a PLD Trunk Show in the store until she closes for the break. Some amazing canvases to go thru from whimsical cats to beautiful scenes, ornaments …

Breaking News – Rittenhouse Needlepoint has new owners !! Russell and Stephen have sold a majority share of the business to a group of people that shined above all the rest that made an offer. They have not said yet who this group is but that they have prior expertise in running a retail business. A new web site is coming, a change in the way finishing is done and more. Their ambitious plans are meant to bring this craft to a broader audience. Good Luck – can’t wait to hear more details ! My Needlepoint

It’s what we have been waiting for – Summer ! Now it just needs to stop raining !! Since we have had more indoor time than we expected try looking at Needlepoint .com – they are doing a new stitch each Sunday for cute coasters of summer drinks. Adorable for a new stitcher. https://needlepoint.com/products/sunday-stitch-along-summer-drink

If you are in a more whimsical state of mind – check out Blue Ridge Stitchery. They not only have cute drink canvases but some other wonderful new items to choose from. Might give you some ideas for the upcoming class Jacqui C is doing with Kelly Starke – hopefully you have signed up! New Arrivals — Blue Ridge Stitchery

If you are more traditional then check out Elizabeth Bradley for some stunning looking Sea Shell kits that are on sale – 25% off thru the 16th (gotta love a good sale !) https://americas.elizabethbradley.com/collections/the-shells-needlepoint-kits

Did you hear the news ??? One of the most popular designers – Kathy Rees of Needle Delights got married ! Congratulations Kathy !! Of course you can’t let an occasion like that go by without creating a chart for it! She has added 5 new charts to her web site including this one for a wedding !! She has beautiful designs – check out her web site: Needle Delights Originals – Needle Delights Originals

Before you know it Halloween will be upon us. Now is the time to start stitching this cute “Spooky Banner”. The Enriched Stitch is doing this as a club starting in Sept/Oct on these 6 canvases. Go to their web site for particulars https://enrichedstitch.myshopify.com/products/spooky-bunting-club

So we can’t ignore Christmas because – it to is coming !!! Nimble Needle in Atlanta has a new club that started in June – Rachel Donnelly’s Advent Gingerbread House. They have just added an exclusive Hanukkah House. This part of the club starts this month (July) and is a total of 24 pieces including Gelt, Dreidels, Menorah and more. Want to see the cutest angels that work up quicker than you can blink???? KC Needlepoint has more than 70 different ones on their web site. They are on 13 count (you can do that with your eyes closed) and they are for all occasions not just Christmas. https://www.kcneedlepoint.com/collections/angel-needlepoint-ornaments?&utm_campaign=campaign%3A+Angels+%28648a00cad5fcc818eaa65baa%29&utm_medium=email&utm_source=omnisend&omnisendContactID=61fc368aa1816e00226a532d

KC Needlepoint also got a “Bright Idea” – A Neck Light ! For when you need some extra light to see as you stitch. They say it’s great for stitching in bed, on a plane, in your yard etc. The rechargeable light has 3 color modes so you can adjust the intensity of the light. It’s also foldable and light weight so you can tuck it in your “Needlepoint Bag of Tricks”. https://www.kcneedlepoint.com/blogs/news/introducing-around-the-neck-lights?&utm_campaign=campaign%3A+Lights-+around+the+neck+%2864a5cf50c92f6acfa0dc876c%29&utm_medium=email&utm_source=omnisend&omnisendContactID=61fc368aa1816e00226a532d

Do you own a Phallet? I know many that would like one !!!!! It’s a “Phone Wallet” with several canvases to choose from for the front. It’s one of many new items at Stitch By Stitch in NY. They are having a Lee self finishing trunk show for the month of July and this is the first time I have seen a backpack or a self finishing pillow. Lee has so many great self finishing products that it may sound like a “Road Trip” to me !! Ny Needlepoint | Stitch By Stitch Larchmont, NY | United States (stitchbystitchneedlepoint.com)

A friend of mine sent me an email for a web site I had never seen before – it’s called Lucky Jonquil Lucky Jonquil. Get a drink of choice and wander thru their web site as they have some really interesting items. Though geared maybe more for embroidery on a hoop they have some great threads, notions and if you enjoy Sashiko – well, they have patterns, threads, thimbles and more. I am a lover of Perle 8 and they have variegated balls in lovely colors. My credit card might be sizzling soon!

Tips and Tricks: What a great idea from the Serendipity web site – don’t have a needle minder with you? Out in the margin work a Rhodes stitch with some left over wool thread and use that to anchor your needle !!! As Jane from Chilly Hollow says – that is a smart cookie award idea !!

Who was that Famous Stitcher? That is Hannelore Brown, the designer of those retro luggage tags from Hedgehog Needlepoint. Founded in January 2020 at the urging of her children, she channeled her life long creative side for knitting, cross-stitch, needlepoint etc into a company aimed to help you find the joy and fun of needlepoint.

Well, if you were not at the monthly meeting – you missed it !! Jacqui C. did the most wonderful presentation on cording. Who knew there could be so much to know and Jacqui made it so much fun you just want to go out and get yourself some cup hooks and have at it !! A wonderful meeting! July will be all about the Woodlawn show this year and anything you need to know for next year. If you go to the meeting in person, they will be having a bring your own dinner (and clean up after!) September is the meeting to keep in mind. It will be a Zoom only meeting and it’s all about Sundance beads.

Our member, Ellen B. just finished an unusual canvas. It was on the back of Needlepointers magazine and it was amazing ! She became obsessed and with the help of Pam Miller she has a showcase piece (once Framed Image is done with it). Here is the before framing picture – yes those are real feathers – among other amazing parts to this. Congrats Ellen.

Happy 4th of July !! A wonderful holiday to celebrate unless you have the weather we have been having. Between the rain and smoke haze causing bad air quality – the best thing to do is stay inside and stitch !! Sounds good to me. Since your inside many stores are having Independence Day Sales.

DMC Thread is giving 30% off on July 4th – Site Wide. Check out their Designer Kits besides their thread, something for everyone. https://www.dmc.com/US/en/kits/kits-by-collection/designer-collection?products_en_production%5Bquery%5D=

Now that you just may have made a purchase – or two – or three… Look at Chaparral for some custom Acrylic Trays. A nice way to safely display your needlepoint finishes. I had trouble finding it on their web site so you might want to call the store. https://ndlpt.com/

So you love those retro luggage tags? Labors of Love now have Boarding Passes. The canvas also fits in the acrylic hand bags. laborsofloveneedlepoint.shop/iishop?form_version=2&search_keyword=bording+pass&image_x=0&image_y=0

Staying local ?? KC Needlepoint has an interesting kit – a cooler ! It comes in 2 sizes and it includes the finishing. Once you finish the stitching you send it to them and they send back the finished cooler. https://www.kcneedlepoint.com/blogs/news/needlepoint-coolers-our-latest-kit-with-finishing-included?_pos=2&_sid=49d4755b3&_ss=r

Ready to take your cooler and get away? Patricia Sone is going to do a retreat in September at the Osterville Needlepoint Shop from Sept 26 – 29th. The project will be her American Flag. You need to contact Marythecuriouscowgirl@gmail.com for more information.

Another retreat happening next year is done thru Needlepoint By The Bay and it will be held in Newport RI. What a wonderful place to go for a needlepoint retreat ! Needlepoint by the Bay – Thread & Needle Supply

I could not resist showing you the new Ruth Schmuff Fishy Fish class. It’s over 2 days and is done via Zoom in September. There are 2 Zecca canvases, each on 18 count and measure 10 X 12.5 inches – she will cover both. You can buy just one or both. FOMO ALERT !! Someone sent a link for a neat way to hold your bottle of water/soda etc. When I looked it up on (of course) Amazon I found a step better – this one also has a basket attachment that swivels under the table. Great way to keep your scissor, laying tool, etc at hand yet out of the way. Easy to attach to the table with a clamp – a great item when taking a class. https://www.amazon.com/Desk-Pros-Under-Organizer-Attachment/dp/B0BW7DWZ1G/ref=sxin_17_sbv_search_btf?content-id=amzn1.sym.6cfa532e-9c8f-48d2-87a3-a61547a0d356%3Aamzn1.sym.6cfa532e-9c8f-48d2-87a3-a61547a0d356&crid=38AD9MOIK58TF&cv_ct_cx=desk%2Bcup%2Bholder&keywords=desk%2Bcup%2Bholder&pd_rd_i=B0BW7DWZ1G&pd_rd_r=bc5acd37-e7dd-4e3e-886a-9d4e09d61803&pd_rd_w=fJ5Fe&pd_rd_wg=rlcHz&pf_rd_p=6cfa532e-9c8f-48d2-87a3-a61547a0d356&pf_rd_r=C031A73BCKBN1QWTFFZJ&qid=1688236144&sbo=RZvfv%2F%2FHxDF%2BO5021pAnSA%3D%3D&sprefix=desk%2Bcup%2Bholder%2Caps%2C81&sr=1-1-5190daf0-67e3-427c-bea6-c72c1df98776&th=1

Tips and Tricks – What are you using the item your stitching for???? Is it a belt, a purse, napkin rings….. Anything that might come in contact with water should be “Color Fast” Read Ellen Johnson’s article on how to tell if your thread is able to deal with a wet occasion. https://www.serendipityneedleworks.com/color-fastness-needlepoint-thread/

Get out your threads and your cording tool – for those that have everything – and you know who you are! This coming week our meeting is about cording. Jacqui C. will be teaching us all how to use that item that looks like it belongs in a fishing tackle box to create those beautiful edges on ornaments. Perfect for finishing the chapter project on picking stitches for small ornaments. Have you finished your ornament yet ????????

We have a winner in our chapter – Cathryn C has won the EGA Gold Thread Award for 2023 for our region. She will receive the honor at this years Seminar in Boston. The award recognizes outstanding individuals who have given freely of their time and talents and best exemplify EGA’s purpose. Like we didn’t know that about Cathryn ! A national recipient is selected from all the regional winners – we are all routing for you Cathryn. She is always involved in so many ways with the chapter and does a wonderful job with programs. We are lucky to have her in our chapter. Congratulations Cathryn !

A few days ago I had the most lovely conversation with the owner/designer of Hedgehog Needlepoint. Her company is only around since 2020 but she has made a big splash in the needlepoint world. Who doesn’t love those Retro Luggage Tags?? (over 200 hundred places and counting) I had the opportunity to help a friend put her stitching in the leather self finishing tag they offer and was impressed by how well it’s made – it would surely survive airplane travel these days (but who would chance it on their luggage after all that work !) She has come out with a round version of those tags. The same as the original ones minus the numbers and letters on the bottom. Great as ornaments for a travel tree. AND – Even better, she has some new items coming later this year – can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeve !! Hedgehog Needlepoint

It’s finally hitting the stores – Mary’s Whimsical Stitches Volume 4 – and this one is all about stitches for small areas ! What is different about this book, each stitch has a QR code on the page. If you want to see an actual stitched sample, you can use your smart phone camera and it will show you a sample on Mary’s Instagram page. Check your local LNS to see if it’s in stock yet. Fans of the SuZy Murphy books will be happy to hear that they are back in stock. Rainbow Gallery is the distributor and has brought back several of the out of print books. Contact your LNS for a copy. What’s New – Rainbow Gallery

Much different from what you expect to see. Some are also deeply discounted. Worth a look. Sale – Ehrman Tapestry

As a “Public Service Announcement” please be aware that the Edwardian Needle will be closed for vacation from July 26th thru August 15th. Make sure you have what you need – we all hate to be caught short of supplies as it will feel like an eternity before we can get back in the store !!

Tips and Tricks : I have never heard of a “Ribbon Laying Tool” before until I ran across something talking about Rainbow Gallery making it. It looks like it would make some of those beautiful ribbon items easier to create. Easy to mistake for a regular laying tool. This one is not stiletto sharp so your not going to snag the ribbon. I could not find it on the Rainbow Gallery web site so here is an alternate site to look at : rainbow gallery laying tools petite ribbon laying tool cross stitch (stoneycreek.com)

Who was that Famous Stitcher? This was no easy one to guess – this is Drake Dickerson, Kate Dickerson’s son. He has come into the business and has designed several items in the newest collection.

Wow – it’s June already !! Time flies when you enjoy our favorite pass time – stitching. This months meeting will be about making the cording everyone puts around their ornaments. Something we all have put on but take for granted. You will now appreciate that extra edging after learning how it’s made.

The new Needlepointers Magazine will be in your mail soon. You can check it out online in the mean time. Wait until you see the Tale of 2 Stitchers – such a difference between them. The back page is again a head turner. It must have inspired so many stores to be giving classes in ribbon work!!

The last day to register for the 2023 Seminar in Atlanta is June 6 – no time left for procrastinating! You can also buy some Seminar Swag from the Atlanta Chapter but quantities are limited. Here is the form to make your purchases: https://cdn.ymaws.com/www.needlepoint.org/resource/resmgr/forms/seminar/atlanta_chapter_merchandise_.pdf

As for locally – The Framed Image is having his annual sale. He is and expert in framing needlework and after 28 years in business – I think he’s got it down pat! He’s giving 15% off one custom framing along with other deals. A portion of all sales goes to support Artworks to help enhance the lives of children and young adults with chronic illnesses. Framed Image – Home (theframedimage.com)

Have nothing to frame??? The Edwardian Needle is having the first trunk show in quite a while. She just got in piles of canvases from Alice Peterson including the popular “Stitching Girls”. Children’s items, A Woman’s View and so many more. One is better than the next. Also, the cover of the new Needlepoint Now does no justice to the actual piece that was stitched by Jen, who works at the Edwardian Needle. The piece is in the store so while your there ask to see it – amazing!! Call the store for details at 973-743-9833

Stitch By Stitch is having a trunk show of Sew Much Fun – who could resist those adorable stuffed animals?!?!? Ny Needlepoint | Stitch By Stitch Larchmont, NY | United States (stitchbystitchneedlepoint.com)

New Clubs to join – yes – the creativity never ends! The first is from Old World Designs Needlepoint. They knew right where to get our attention – does Yukon Cornelius ring a bell from your childhood??? They have a club with all the characters from that Christmas show from 1964. I can still hear Burl Ives singing ! https://www.oldworlddesigns.com/classes-at-owd.htm

The 2nd new club is thru the Needlepointer. This “Christmas Lights” club will run 12 months and start in August. These bulbs are also very retro in appearance except you don’t have to worry about one going out and killing the entire string. https://www.theneedlepointer.com/christmas-lightsdiv-idclubsubtitleopen-enrollmentdiv/p8502994?cse=nl0527&goal=0_3621358244-9e8c9712fc-69343533&mc_cid=9e8c9712fc&mc_eid=2e6039e84f

Fireside Stitchery now has a new owner, Lynn Upchurch and she is making the place her own. She has plans to move the store, put in an updated web site, bring in lots of new threads, new notions, canvases and extend the store hours. Ambitious ! Besides having a Pippin Trunk show she is starting off with a really big bang by giving 20% off everything in the store with select canvases at 50% off. Might be worth a road trip to Malvern PA. Good luck to Lynn ! About — Fireside Stitchery

Planet Earth has a new thread – Milan – it’s a 50/50 blend of silk and merino wool. It comes in 30 yard skeins and is a single strand thread. It is a bit thicker so it covers on both 18 and 13 count. They say it’s luxuriously soft to stitch with. KC Needlepoint is carrying the entire line and it’s in stock. https://www.kcneedlepoint.com/collections/milan?page=1

Tips and Tricks How do we protect and store our “small” stash of canvases until we use them – I had a hard time with that word small ! LOL According to Diversions Needlepoint –

let’s consider what we are trying to protect when storing needlepoint canvases. Of course, we need to protect the painted design, but an equally important consideration is the protection of the canvas sizing. Sizing is what keeps canvases firm. The better the condition of sizing at the end of a project, the better the finished product will be. This is why we recommend using stretcher bars, by the way! Quite right, Willie! Any dampness or creases will break down canvas sizing, much to the detriment of the piece.

Here is what we paws to consider when storing our needlepoint stash:

Environment: Temperate, dry, away from direct light, No attics or damp basements. No smokey or smelly hidey holes.

Canvas Form: Rolled or flat, NEVER FOLDED. Folds will break down the sizing and show up in the finished piece.

Container: Waterproof plastic bins or cloth sacks (old pillow cases?) stored on elevated shelves away from water sources. Never airtight containers: a canvas needs to breathe so that mold can’t develop.

Preventative measures: Silica gel packs. These are the annoying little desiccant packets that have fallen out of every Amazon package ever opened.

Who was that Famous Stitcher? That was Brenda Hart. She passed away in December. She was an award winning needlework artist, teacher and author of 6 books. She was a master artist in the needlework community and always contributing to the betterment of the art form.

All of our condolences and prayers go to Mark Craddock and his family – the beloved teacher at Nimble Needle in Atlanta. He passed away yesterday of an aggressive form of cancer.

This past meeting was full of information. Sue C. spoke about her out reach event in Bridgewater. She said it went so well that another wellness center has asked her to do a repeat performance. Not only that, the facility she was at decided to start up a “craft afternoon”. Inspiration comes from many places !

This was the first time we had a meeting with an “Owl” – what an interesting innovation to the zoom part of the meeting. The library allowed us to use their “Owl” which is a device that is hooked up to your computer with zoom and gives you a 365 degree view of the room on the top of your screen and a picture of all the participants in the rest of the screen. It moves to show the speaker and hear them better at the same time so you feel more a part of the meeting rather than being a fly on the wall. The next meeting you want to pin that picture and it’s like your in the room with everyone, give it a try.

Melita G. recently received her EGA Master Craftsman Certificate. She spoke about her journey thru the program. What she would do differently and what she was more than happy with. She even made the cover of Needle Pointers Magazine in March with her design called “Tahitian Treat”. Well done Melita !!

There are several great things coming up at NJNA. June will have a lesson by Jacqui in cording, a Woodlawn review in the summer, Sept will be a zoom only meeting as we will be having a talk by Sundance Beads. Oct/Nov will have a lesson in how to do a plaid and create a Name Tag. Keep in mind that Jan will be the holiday luncheon again since it was such a hit. Jacqui is also working on getting a guest speaker for next year – a favorite designer of many NJNA members – no names but she does “Beautiful Stitches” ! Our membership has grown but there is always room for more. You have to be in it to enjoy it!!

NJNA is coming up to it’s 35 year Anniversary. It was started in November 1989. Put your thinking caps on as to how we can celebrate this milestone. Did you know that NJNA has 5 elected positions? We are mostly aware of the committees dealing with programs and workshops to stimulate our creativity but there are other necessary positions. It takes a village to make NJNA run. Now having all learned so much about Zoom from living thru a pandemic we have a need for a Technology volunteer along with other open positions. Even if you join us remotely please consider participating in the running of NJNA and contact Linda M or anyone on the Board. We have so much more that we can learn and enjoy together.

The Needlepointer has an interesting new club and they are expecting it to start in September. Over 6 months you stitch 6 fall leaves. Each leaf is finished as a small stand up with a metal plate in the bottom. You also get a Train Set and each car has a magnet so the stand up stays attached. Let’s not forget the threads and stitch guides. They also have plans for more seasons in the future. https://www.theneedlepointer.com/fall-train-setdiv-idclubsubtitleopen-enrollmentdiv/p8502961?cse=nl0513&goal=0_3621358244-2b8d760bf4-69343533&mc_cid=2b8d760bf4&mc_eid=2e6039e84f

Who was that Famous Stitcher? That was Grace Anna Goodhue Coolidge – the wife of Calvin Coolidge. A few weeks after their honeymoon Calvin came to her with a leather bag filled with 52 socks that needed repair ! This request was a far cry from her training. She received her BA from University of Vermont in 1902 with a degree in teaching. She joined the Clarke School for Hearing and Speech in Northampton MA and taught deaf children to communicate by reading lips instead of signing.

Do You Know Who This Famous Stitcher Is ?

Just a reminder – this week is the pop up for Trish Vine at The Edwardian Needle. Tuesday from 12 to 3.
