What’s Happening at NJNA 10/19/24

Standard

This past week we had our monthly meeting and it had a few surprises. Someone discovered how to get the meeting notes electronically since our secretary is nursing a broken arm – feel better Sharon. We also discovered how easy doing the stem on the pumpkin is! It read in the directions to be much more complicated – thank goodness for Jacqui and her great explanation of how to make it come to life. She also had some finishes for us to look at. They all look so different. Makes you want to finish as they all look so great.

The last surprise was having a possible new member join in on the fun at the meeting. Diana W. was on and hopefully enjoyed hanging out with us. We hope to see you again at the next meeting Diana.

Next month we are doing Ribbon Candy ornaments. Please let Jacqui know ASAP if you want to do this project. It’s a quick item and will look great on any holiday tree. The chapter is picking up the cost of materials but they need a count right now so they can get them in the mail in time for the next meeting.

Mark your calendars for the ANG Annual Membership Meeting. It will be held on November 20. The meeting is virtual so you must register to get the Zoom link. If you can’t make it they will be recording the meeting and posting it on the ANG web site. If you have any questions, this is the time to submit them and the Board will address them. They will also be going over any updates, volunteer positions, upcoming programs, and events along with reports from Committee Chairs. See what your organization is doing !

The Needlepoint Stores that offered fund raising for the hurricane victims raised quite a bit ! Needlepoint.com raised over $65 thousand dollars for Operation AirDrop. Stitching Fox and Planet Earth raised $5,500 from the sale of their exclusive canvas and thread packs. They helped the Red Cross of Western North Carolina. 2’s Company Needlepoint has created a chart of the state of North Carolina and 100% of the proceeds from the sale will go to Craft Futures Fund Emergency Relief. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, artists have lost their studios, their work, and their livelihoods. Craft Futures Fund Emergency Relief at the Center for Craft in Asheville, NC will provide direct critical resources to artists in Western North Carolina. You can get this chart at: https://www.2sconeedlepoint.com/shop/Charts-for-Charity/p/Chart-for-Charity—Craft-Futures-Emergency-Fund-x85935459.htm

If you are a cat lover you may be interested in this new club from The Needlepointer called Feline Friends. This club runs for 6 months but you work on just one canvas. Over 6 months you get a monthly packet with a stitch guide and threads for each new section. The first month is expected to be February and you will get the canvas then. It is Puurrrfectly adorable. https://www.theneedlepointer.com/feline-friendsdiv-idclubsubtitleopen-enrollmentdiv/p8514209?cse=nl101124&goal=0_3621358244-1a8af9cd8e-69343533&mc_cid=1a8af9cd8e&mc_eid=2e6039e84f

I have found that many people that needlepoint are also voracious readers. Needlepoint.com has a neat looking way to combine the two. Kirk and Bradley has come out with the London Bookends. They are selling them as a kit with 2 printed canvases, threads, stitch guide and embellishment packet. Gotta love the corgi and the pigeon on the guard’s hat!! https://needlepoint.com/products/london-bookends-kit?utm_source=Klaviyo&utm_medium=campaign&utm_campaign=2024_10_15%20Bookends&utm_klaviyo_id=01EY735XHE675Z0Z1C4Z7SB8DK&_kx=SpNrwJYeSg8JHGV3vDRNkpeUD67Ddf2hdz1HBTATTO0.TxAVmM

DMC has a new way to store their floss. They call them modular storage boxes and they stack on top of each other. Inside the top one is an extra space for needles, scissors etc. They are offering 2 deals. You can buy a 3 drawer set and get 100 skeins of their floss OR you can buy the same thing with an additional expansion set (total 6 drawers) with 150 skeins of their floss. As an added bonus they throw in a pattern to monogram the the top and the fabric which can be put under a plastic window on the top. You can always buy more 3 drawer sets depending on your need. They suggest using the top to put your project in and you can just pick it up and go. (Yes, I am laughing at that one). They look neat and appear to hold a lot. https://www.dmc.com/US/en/new/modular-storage-boxes?products_en_production%5Bquery%5D=

Tips And Tricks: This is a cute stocking stuffer for a stitcher – a deck of playing cards with a different stitch on 50 of them. The other side shows thimbles. Apparently these go quickly so order soon. https://www.kcneedlepoint.com/products/deal-a-stitch-cards?_pos=1&_sid=46d1137cd&_ss=r&omnisendContactID=61fc368aa1816e00226a532d&utm_campaign=campaign%3A+Deal+a+stitch+%2866f3063515e5347977319991%29&utm_medium=email&utm_source=omnisend

Are you ready to finish a pumpkin??? I looked ahead at the stem which Jacqui will be covering in this months meeting. It is a bit more complicated than I thought it was !! Looking forward to Jacqui’s idea’s on how to make this finish come about !! There are some interesting versions of pumpkins going on in the guild – can’t wait to see them all !

Oh No! Sharon B, our Secretary is down and out for the count. She went on vacation to that dangerous place – England – slipped and fell in the airport and broke her arm. Yikes – no stitching for quite a while !!! We all wish her well, Feel better Sharon !

I think most of us agree that we need some younger people to keep this craft alive. ANG is taking a new step to hopefully make this happen. Carley Linn, the new ANG President has announced that there will be a new category of membership. There is now an “Associate Membership” for people under the age of 35. It’s a discounted fee and is available for 5 years. They will benefit from most of what membership brings but the magazine will be an online version only. Talk to all the younger people you know who enjoy our favorite hobby but may not have as much time to devote.

ANG wants to remind you that registration for their “Virtual Spring Fling” begins Nov 4th thru the 26th. There are 9 classes you can choose from but they have not revealed what they are offering yet – stay tuned. Their online auction totaled a stellar $12,332 – a win, win for everyone.

Let’s give a warm welcome to our new Eastern Area Rep – Allison Leach. Allison has lived in Charlottesville, Virginia, for over 30 years, and has retired from working at the University of Virginia for the past 20+ years. Allison was an instructor and researcher in teacher education focusing on early childhood education, and is now a Charlottesville shop girl at Lauren Ryan’s needlepoint shop, Poppypointe! Currently she runs the Stitch Club in Charlottesville, and is a member of two local ANG Chapters – Piedmont and Shenandoah Valley! Welcome Allison !

If your in the neighborhood of Larchmont NY check out the local Library. Stitch By Stitch is Exhibiting a collection of Needlepoint and Fiber Arts in the Oresman Gallery. Both the staff and their local stitching customers will be showing examples of beadwork, embellishments, decorative stitches, various fibers etc. If your on their web site also check out their Stitcher of the Month – she has done some amazing pieces. https://stitchbystitchneedlepoint.com/?srsltid=AfmBOooH6_X6wJCDBrOoWraDtc2co2C_Yr_6w_z-KYpYT5MboZbMw3ep

The devastation caused by the hurricane/Tropical Storm Helene is considered at a level of “Once in a Life Time”. The needlepoint community is jumping in to help support the effort to help all those in the storm’s path. Needlepoint .com is having an “Every Stitch Helps” event. Through Oct 6th 50% of all sales will go to “Operation Air Drop” and 100% of the sales from the Asheville and North Carolina travel round canvases. https://needlepoint.com/collections/newest-products

Poppypointe is donating a portion of the proceeds from The Four Seasons of Virginia canvases to the Red Cross Fund For Hurricane Helene Relief. https://poppypointe.com/products/four-seasons-of-virginia?_pos=1&_psq=four+seasons&_ss=e&_v=1.0&mc_cid=4038437393&mc_eid=241f847d0f

Stitching Fox has partnered with Plant Earth and they have come up with 2 exclusive canvases along with a “stash builder” thread pack. They are $35 each or 2 for $50 and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross of Western North Carolina. https://www.stitchingfox.com/

NEW CLUBS !!! Very DIFFERENT Clubs !! The first one is by Bedecked and Bedazzled aka Ruth Schmuff. I don’t remember the last time she had a club but this one is all about the monster of your childhood. Designed by Sandra Vargas these are her take on the classic families. Is there any you don’t recognize? https://bedeckedandbeadazzled.com/product/retro-monsters/

The Needlepointer has a new club that looks interesting – all the canvases are Lunar New Year Firecrackers ! It is expected to start in Feb and runs for 12 months. They are on 18 mesh and are only 6 X 5 – a quick stitch ! https://www.theneedlepointer.com/lunar-new-year-firecrackersdiv-idclubsubtitleopen-enrollmentdiv/p8514207?cse=nl09162824&goal=0_3621358244-807ae2a07c-69343533&mc_cid=807ae2a07c&mc_eid=2e6039e84f

Everywhere you look there is something about coffee. It’s nothing new and we have seen numerous versions from Rachel Donley (so cute too). The new version is Iced Coffee by Morgan Julia Designs. She has recently developed the taste! https://morganjuliadesigns.com/products/iced-coffee?_pos=1&_psq=iced+coffee&_ss=e&_v=1.0&variant=43566093795526&_kx=rV4MBEfWGkwURglkyUXCLopGavY2DCJQzP6Y94aO8T4.RWeQns If you want to take it that one step further though, go to Potomac Beads – they have beads that look like real coffee beans. What a great embellishment. (Thank you Jane of Chilly Hollow) https://www.potomacbeads.com/search

I was looking at some of the new things from market on Stitch By Stitch’s web site and found another place to put needlepoint – your hat !! Kate Dickerson has paired up with Blue Canary who makes the hats and they fit a 4 inch round on the top. There was also items you don’t think of that designer painting – like Jean Smith doing blue and white platters. Zecca doing women’s faces and you have to smile at the Susan Roberts backgammon set with an ocean scene. Just a peak of new directions the designers are heading. https://stitchbystitchneedlepoint.com/collections/whats-new-2024

Tips and Tricks: From the Needlepoint Clubhouse – when getting an insert finished for a clutch purse – have the finisher add a ribbon loop/tab. This way when you go to change the canvas out for another one it will be easier.

Who was that Famous Stitcher? That is Maggie Boroujerdi – she is the owner of Love MHB Studio. Her pieces are bold graphics with simple lines and everything is on 13 count ! Check out her designs at: https://lovemhbstudio.com/collections/wholesale
