What’s Happening at NJNA 11/4/23

Standard

Wow – how time flies ! We have started to collect ornaments for the “Festival of Trees” again. This year Amy B has donated the use of a bigger tree than in the past so we need a lot more ornaments ! You can drop off ornaments at the Edwardian Needle this month and they will also be collected at the November meeting. I am sure we are always a destination tree at the event.

It’s time for nominations as there are open positions to be filled at this next election. Please contact Linda M or Carol B as they are the nominating committee this time around. We are all looking forward to an exciting year ahead with many new ideas and projects to be offered. You will see some of what is to come at the Holiday Lunch in January. Be a part of the challenge to provide new and interesting projects this coming year – and most of all – fun !

It’s getting to be that other time of year – Woodlawn submissions! You will receive an email soon about all the details you need to know in order to send in your piece (or two or three) to this premier event. NJNA is always a big contributor to the show. The theme this time is “Needlework in Everyday Life” Linda M and her better half have again volunteered to bring the submissions down to the event.

Have you been practicing your plaid stitching????? This month’s meeting is all about making a name tag and you can choose to use your new skill of “Plaid” for it. Of course you want it to reflect “YOU” so – make it your own !! I will say that if you attend various stitching events it is nice to have a name tag for all the new people you meet. Embrace the name tag and let’s see everyone’s hard work at the Holiday Lunch !

Don’t forget – ANG’s Spring Fling has opened it’s online registration now for the most popular classes from prior years. You got email on November 3 with the details and a link to sign up. Go for it !

A reminder that the ANG Annual Meeting is on Wednesday November 15th. between 2 PM and 3 PM. The meeting is done virtually and you must register to get the Zoom link. If you can’t make it the session will be recorded. You received an email yesterday (Needle Pointers Newsletter) with a link to register.

Are you a member of Cyberpointers? Does “Groups io” seem to be very confusing?? Me To ! Cyberpointers has a large membership and even the board agrees that many people have a problem navigating this site. They are about to send out a poll to determine the level of interest in doing a tour via Zoom. (I know I could benefit from that, I always feel like I am missing something) They have come up with 2 time slots and are worried about the level of participation on each slot. They don’t want to exceed the capacity of the Zoom session. They are willing to do more Zoom sessions depending on the poll results. Right now they are anticipating doing the tour on November 14 (day time) and 15 (evening). Watch your email for the poll and respond so that we can all feel more comfortable in this ANG chapter.

You now the year is winding down when you start to get emails about gift guides ! Of course we all know how easy it is to make a list of what we want. Books, stands, maybe a get away, one of the new canvases – or two – or more ! Yikes – We are all bag ladies and there are so many great ones to choose from….. I need to take my head out of that needlepoint cloud and get real. Let’s start with a designer I had never seen before, Susan Battle. Stitch By Stitch is having a Susan Battle trunk show and it will make you giddy if you love dogs ! It also has great plaids if you like the look but don’t want to “make your own”. https://stitchbystitchneedlepoint.com/pages/susan-battle-needlepoint-trunk-show?_kx=6D5Y7Jiene-hlgseirQx1RFyVxGMpjd5qfVYcayxxNM%3D.SwCMrn

In looking at Stitch By Stitch’s recap of the latest market treasures they had some interesting ways to use a canvas along with new versions of destination canvases. Check out the tree topper – a very clever way to attache it. Also, I fell in love with the fish by Ellen Skidmore. https://stitchbystitchneedlepoint.com/?_kx=6D5Y7Jiene-hlgseirQx1RFyVxGMpjd5qfVYcayxxNM%3D.SwCMrn

Tips and Tricks: Do you know the difference between overdyed and variegated threads? According to Diversions Needlepoint in CO you need to go to Textile Terms – Definition & Explanation @ TextileGlossary.com. “Overdyed” is a process where previously dyed thread is then dyed again using a different color. “Variegated” starts out with a white base thread so the dying creates discrete markings of different colors. Either way they wind up with multi hues of rich color to add interest in your stitching project.
